Course overview
What to expect
Peak Performance Buoyancy
Imagine hovering perfectly still, gliding past a reef without a single fin kick disturbing the sand, using so little air your buddy wonders how you did it. That's what this popular specialty delivers. Over one focused day you'll master proper weighting, trim and fin technique, dramatically cutting your air consumption and reducing contact with the reef. Open to any Junior Open Water Diver aged ten or older, and it pairs perfectly with Advanced Open Water Diver.
In detail
About This Course
Buoyancy control is the skill that separates divers who merely get through a dive from those who glide effortlessly through the water, and the PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy specialty is built entirely around perfecting it. Run over one day at Diving Academy, it is one of the most popular specialties for divers who want to feel genuinely comfortable underwater.
The course covers proper weighting, trim and fin technique, helping divers hover motionless, glide smoothly and control their ascents and descents with precision. Along the way, divers also learn how refined buoyancy dramatically reduces air consumption, extending dive times and making every tank last longer.
Better control means less contact with the reef or wreck below, so the course also builds an awareness of how to observe marine life closely without disturbing fragile surroundings, an important skill for responsible diving.
Open to any PADI Junior Open Water Diver aged ten or older, Peak Performance Buoyancy is a natural companion to the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course and pairs well with specialties such as Wreck Diver or Deep Diver, where precise buoyancy really pays off.
The process
How The Course Works

Step 1
Buoyancy Theory
You'll work through the independent study side of the course, covering how weighting, trim and even your breathing rhythm all affect the way you sit in the water. It's knowledge you can pick up in your own time, including online through PADI eLearning.

Step 2
Two Dives, Total Control
Then it's two dives with your instructor, fine-tuning your trim and weighting until hovering motionless feels completely natural. Better buoyancy means better air consumption, less risk of an uncontrolled ascent, and far less chance of clipping the reef by accident.
PADI states: two dives with a PADI Instructor, for PADI (Junior) Open Water Divers aged 10 and up
