About This Course
It is built for anyone who wants to turn a love of monofin swimming and underwater performance into a proper teaching career, with training delivered at our Reading location.
Over the five days you will cover how to teach mermaid skills to students at every level, from complete beginners learning to move safely and confidently in a monofin, through to more advanced swimmers refining technique, breath control and underwater presentation. The emphasis throughout is on building the teaching skills, safety awareness and structured lesson planning needed to run mermaid classes of your own.
This course suits confident, competent mermaid swimmers who are ready to take the next step into instructing, whether that means running sessions at a leisure centre, offering private lessons, or building a wider mermaid programme. It is a genuinely unusual and rewarding qualification, opening up a niche but growing corner of the aquatic instruction world.
Once qualified as a Mermaid Instructor, the natural next step is Mermaid Instructor Trainer, allowing you to train the next generation of mermaid instructors yourself. For anyone serious about building a career around mermaid swimming, this course is where that path really begins.
The process
How The Course Works
Step 1
Instructor Prerequisites & Standards
Before training begins, you arrive as a certified Advanced Mermaid (or with equivalent logged experience) holding current EFR training, so the course itself can focus entirely on how to teach.
PADI states: requires PADI Advanced Mermaid certification, or proof of 15 mermaid diving sessions including 3 or more in open water, plus current EFR Primary and Secondary Care
Step 2
Confined Water Teaching Practicum
You take the lead teaching Discover Mermaid, Basic Mermaid and Mermaid skills in the pool, refining your presentations under your instructor trainer's eye until they reach genuinely role-model standard.
Step 3
Open Water Teaching Practicum
The same process moves into open water, where you prepare to run the Advanced Mermaid course for future students, applying everything you have learned about teaching in less controlled conditions.
Step 4
Certification as Mermaid Instructor
A final evaluation confirms you are ready, and certification qualifies you to teach every PADI Mermaid student level, from a beginner's first Discover Mermaid session through to Advanced Mermaid.
