What to expect
Course Director
Course Director is the summit of the PADI professional pathway, the rating held by instructors who go on to train the next generation of instructors themselves. It's earned through a genuinely competitive application, where your diving history and teaching experience are put under real scrutiny. Reaching it means shaping standards across the whole industry rather than just teaching within it, a career-defining milestone we're proud to help ambitious instructors work toward.
In detail
About This Course
PADI Course Director is the highest and most respected professional rating in recreational scuba diving, held by Master Instructors who go on to train the next generation of PADI Instructors themselves. Where most instructor-level roles focus on teaching divers, a Course Director teaches other instructors, running Instructor Development Courses and other instructor-level training that shapes standards across the whole industry.
Getting there is not simply a matter of enrolling. Entry is earned by securing a place on a Course Director Training Course, or CDTC, through a genuinely competitive application process that examines your diving and teaching experience alongside your training goals and readiness for the role. It reflects just how much responsibility comes with the rating.
To be considered, you need to already hold PADI Master Instructor status with solid teaching experience and prior IDC assisting experience behind you, along with an EFR Instructor Trainer rating. You will also need at least two hundred and fifty logged dives and practical experience working within a PADI Dive Centre or Resort, all of which demonstrate the depth of background expected at this level.
For instructors who reach this point, Course Director represents the culmination of years of professional development, and our team at Diving Academy is genuinely proud to support ambitious instructors as they work toward it.
The process
How The Course Works

Step 1
A Competitive Path In
Getting a seat on the Course Director Training Course is an achievement in itself. You'll already need PADI Master Instructor status, an Emergency First Response Instructor Trainer rating and at least 250 logged dives, and your application competes against other candidates on the strength of a business plan developed with a PADI training centre.
PADI states: applicants need at least 250 logged dives and must hold PADI Master Instructor and EFR Instructor Trainer ratings to apply.

Step 2
Nine Days of Hands-On Training
The training course itself runs across nine intensive days, pairing online presentations, knowledge reviews and an exam on PADI's systems and procedures with hands-on workshops in the classroom, confined water and open water. The focus throughout is evaluation technique, professional development and the counselling skills you'll need to guide future instructors.
PADI states: the Course Director Training Course runs nine days, combining online presentations, knowledge reviews and an exam with hands-on classroom, confined water and open water workshops.

Step 3
Certification as a Course Director
Complete it successfully and you join one of diving's smallest professional circles, qualified to run PADI Instructor Development Courses and shape the next generation of instructors yourself.
