What to expect
Tec 50 Instructor
For technical instructors ready to teach at the sharpest edge of the sport, this rating opens the door to PADI's entire core TecRec line-up, from Discover Tec through Tec 50 itself. Run over a full week, the course sharpens your instructional technique for teaching decompression diving, building on your OWSI status, Enriched Air and Deep Diver ratings, and your own Tec 50 Diver certification.
In detail
About This Course
The PADI Tec 50 Instructor rating authorises experienced technical diving instructors to teach the full run of PADI's core TecRec courses, from Discover Tec taster experiences through Tec Basics, Tec 40 and Tec 45, up to Tec 50 itself. It represents a serious professional commitment and a significant milestone for any technical diving educator.
Candidates arrive already holding PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor status along with Enriched Air Diver and Deep Diver Specialty Instructor ratings, plus their own Tec 50 Diver certification and a substantial logged history of decompression and enriched air diving beyond thirty metres. The course itself, run over a full week at Diving Academy, sharpens instructional technique specifically for the demands of teaching decompression diving.
Because the application also requires a proven certification record, including at least twenty five certified divers and two hundred and fifty logged dives with real decompression experience beyond forty metres, candidates typically arrive as highly experienced technical divers and instructors rather than newcomers to the discipline.
Once certified, Tec 50 Instructors can run the full suite of PADI's air and nitrox based technical courses, forming a strong foundation for those who want to progress further into PADI's trimix instructor ratings.
The process
How The Course Works

Step 1
Instructor-Level Tec Theory
You take your decompression theory, gas planning and deep-diving knowledge to the top of the recreational-to-technical scale, ready to teach PADI's entire core TecRec line-up. It's a demanding academic stretch before the practical work begins.
PADI states: candidates need 250 logged dives, including 25 decompression dives deeper than 40 metres/130 feet, before applying.

Step 2
Teaching Practicum
You run confined and open water sessions as the instructor, delivering the skills and procedures across the Tec 40 to Tec 50 range. Your trainer refines your briefings and in-water coaching until you're teaching at the standard the rating demands.

Step 3
Instructor Exam & Certification
A formal instructor exam closes out the week. Pass it, and you're certified to conduct Discover Tec experiences and teach the Tec Basics, Tec 40, Tec 45 and Tec 50 Diver courses.
PADI states: Tec 50 Instructors are qualified to teach the Tec Basics, Tec 40, Tec 45 and Tec 50 Diver courses.
