What to expect
PADI Rebreather Diver
Imagine diving without the noisy stream of exhaled bubbles, just quiet, extended time underwater and wildlife that stays closer for longer. This is your entry into closed-circuit rebreather diving, where your unit recycles your own exhaled gas. Training is thorough and deliberately unhurried, covering unit assembly and troubleshooting, moving from confined into open water dives, with Advanced Rebreather Diver waiting as your natural next step.
In detail
About This Course
The PADI Rebreather Diver course is the entry point into closed-circuit rebreather diving, a genuinely different way of experiencing the underwater world. Instead of exhaling a stream of noisy bubbles, a rebreather recycles the gas you breathe out, scrubbing carbon dioxide and topping up oxygen as needed, which means a quieter dive, longer no-stop times and noticeably closer wildlife encounters.
This is a serious step up in equipment and procedure from open circuit diving, so the course spends real time on the fundamentals: unit assembly, pre-dive checks, and the specific troubleshooting and problem-management skills a rebreather demands. Because the consequences of getting these things wrong are higher than with a standard regulator setup, the training is thorough and deliberately unhurried.
Training takes place in confined water before moving to open water dives, building your comfort and competence with the unit to a maximum depth of 18m/60ft, the recognised limit for this entry-level rebreather certification. Given the equipment and experience involved, this course is aimed at divers who are already comfortable, confident and genuinely motivated to add rebreather diving to their skill set.
Diving Academy runs this course for divers who meet the prerequisites and want a proper, unrushed introduction to closed-circuit diving. From here, the natural next step is Advanced Rebreather Diver, which extends both depth and experience further.
The process
How The Course Works

Step 1
Rebreather Theory
You start with self-study and instructor-led sessions covering exactly how a closed-circuit rebreather works, plus the setup and maintenance routines that keep one running safely. It is a different way of thinking about breathing gas, and this is where that shift actually clicks.

Step 2
Rebreather Dives
With the unit assembled and checked, you take it into the water with your instructor, experiencing the quiet, bubble-free diving a rebreather makes possible. You learn to trust the system, manage it calmly, and enjoy far longer bottom times than open-circuit diving allows.
PADI states: maximum depth of 18 metres/60 feet
