What to expect

Tec 40

This is the moment recreational limits stop applying and technical diving truly begins. Over two intensive days, Tec 40 builds the gas planning, decompression procedures and equipment discipline that separate technical divers from everyone else, covering sidemount or twinset configuration. Whether you've completed Tec Basics or are stepping into tec diving cold, this course bridges that gap thoroughly and safely, with Tec 45 waiting next.

About This Course

Tec 40 is where technical diving properly begins. Run over two days at Diving Academy, it marks a bold step beyond recreational no-decompression limits and starts introducing the equipment, planning and mindset that full technical diving demands. Whether you have already completed Tec Basics or are stepping into tec diving for the first time, this course is designed to bridge that gap safely and thoroughly.

The course is built around seven knowledge development sections that lay the theoretical groundwork, four practical application sessions where you rehearse procedures and equipment handling before getting wet, and four training dives that put everything into practice in open water. Across these you will work on gas planning, basic decompression procedures, sidemount or twinset configuration depending on your setup, and the discipline and situational awareness that separates technical diving from recreational diving.

To enrol you will need PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification, with Rescue Diver recommended, plus PADI Enriched Air Diver certification, and either PADI Deep Diver certification or proof of ten dives to 30 metres or deeper. You will also need a minimum of thirty logged dives, to be at least eighteen years old, and a Diver Medical Form signed by a physician within the last twelve months.

For divers ready to push past recreational limits, it is the essential first rung on the technical diving ladder.

The process

How The Course Works

  1. Step 1

    Knowledge Development

You work through structured theory sessions covering gas planning, decompression procedures and the equipment configuration technical diving demands. This is where recreational habits get replaced with the discipline decompression diving requires.

  2. Step 2

    Practical Application

Before any of it goes into open water, you rehearse gas switches, problem drills and team procedures on land and in confined water until they become automatic. Technical diving leaves far less room for hesitation, so this stage matters.

  3. Step 3

    Training Dives

You then put it all together on real dives, planning and executing limited decompression dives with your instructor and a dedicated decompression gas. By the end you are qualified well beyond recreational limits, with the gas planning and discipline to dive there safely.

PADI states: seven knowledge development sections, four practical application sessions and four training dives, to 40 metres/130 feet using up to 50% oxygen as a decompression gas
