About This Course

The EFR Instructor course is where your diving career becomes something bigger than diving. Emergency First Response is the PADI system's dedicated first aid and CPR training arm, and once you're certified to teach it, you'll be equipped to pass on genuinely life-saving skills to divers, colleagues, family and friends - skills that matter just as much on dry land as they do at the water's edge.

Across the course you'll work through both halves of the EFR syllabus: Primary Care, which covers CPR and how to manage life-threatening emergencies in the first moments after they happen, and Secondary Care, which deals with the first aid skills needed once a casualty is stable. You'll learn not just the techniques themselves but how to teach them clearly and confidently to students who may never have taken a first aid course before.

Sessions run from our centre in Reading, making it straightforward to fit around work and existing dive commitments.

There's no formal certification prerequisite to get started - genuinely, all you need is a desire to help others. That makes this one of the most accessible instructor-level courses in the PADI system, and a natural stepping stone for anyone who wants to build toward the EFR Instructor Trainer course further down the line.

The process

How The Course Works

  1. Step 1

    Instructor eLearning

Work through the EFR Instructor programme online, at your own pace, absorbing everything you need to know about teaching CPR, first aid and emergency oxygen skills to others. It's the theory foundation you build before you ever stand in front of a class.

PADI states you need to be at least 18 and hold current Primary and Secondary Care (CPR and First Aid) training from within the past 24 months to enrol.

  2. Step 2

    Practical Application Workshops

Meet your EFR Instructor Trainer for hands-on workshops built around realistic emergency scenarios, practising exactly how you'll coach others through them. This is where the material stops being something you know and becomes something you can teach.

  3. Step 3

    EFR Instructor Certification

Come away qualified to teach the full Emergency First Response curriculum, including CPR, AED use, choking response and bleeding control, to divers and non-divers alike. It's also the qualification every PADI Instructor candidate needs before they can teach diving.

PADI states the course is typically completed over two days, combining eLearning with in-person practical workshops.
