Course overview
Rescue Diver
Widely regarded as the single most rewarding certification in recreational diving, Rescue Diver is about building the judgement and calm confidence to prevent problems before they start. Over two days you'll move through increasingly realistic rescue scenarios, learning to spot a struggling diver, manage panic at the surface, and coordinate a response to a missing buddy. Past students consistently describe it as the point their diving genuinely changed for the better.
In detail
The PADI Rescue Diver course is widely regarded as the most rewarding certification in recreational diving, and it is easy to see why. Rather than focusing on new diving skills, it builds the judgement, awareness and confidence to prevent problems before they start, and to handle them calmly if they do happen.
Training begins with knowledge development covering self-rescue, stress recognition and emergency management, before moving into a series of increasingly realistic rescue scenarios. You will practise spotting the early signs of a struggling diver, managing panicked divers at the surface, and coordinating a response to missing diver situations, building real muscle memory for situations you hope never to face for real.
Two open water training dives bring everything together, combining rescue skills with dive planning and problem management under realistic conditions, with your instructor setting up scenarios you must work through as a team. It is demanding, occasionally exhausting, and consistently described by past students as the point their diving genuinely changed for the better.
Because a current Emergency First Response, or equivalent CPR and first aid training within the last 24 months, feeds directly into the course, many students complete their EFR training with us alongside it. The result is a diver who is not just more skilled, but noticeably calmer and more switched-on underwater.
The process

Step 1
You move through structured knowledge sections covering stress recognition, accident management, equipment problems and rescue breathing, at your own pace and in your own time. It's the thinking half of rescue - understanding what can go wrong before you ever have to fix it.
PADI states: the course is built around five knowledge development sections.

Step 2
You then work through a structured set of exercises, from surface tows to underwater problem-solving, each one building the kind of instinctive response that only comes from practising it for real. This is where confidence stops being theoretical.
PADI states: the course includes ten rescue exercises.

Step 3
Everything comes together in full open water rescue scenarios, run start to finish as if they were real emergencies. It's the moment the course stops being a series of drills and becomes proof you can genuinely handle it.
PADI states: the course includes two open water rescue scenarios, with most training conducted in open water.
