What to expect
Emergency First Response Primary and Secondary Care
Emergencies do not wait for you to feel ready, so build the confidence to act now, before it counts. This hands-on one-day course covers both CPR and first aid, taking you through life-threatening scenarios like cardiac arrest and AED use, then broadening into everyday injury assessment and splinting. Open to anyone, it also fulfils the First Aid requirement for PADI Rescue Diver and Divemaster courses.
In detail
About This Course
Emergency First Response Primary and Secondary Care is a hands-on course covering both CPR and first aid, taught by a certified Emergency First Response Instructor. It is not exclusive to divers; the skills apply equally to everyday life, family situations and workplaces, which is exactly why so many people take it alongside their diver training.
Primary Care focuses on the immediate response to life-threatening emergencies, including CPR, use of an AED and managing serious bleeding. Secondary Care builds on that foundation with the first aid skills for less urgent but still important situations, such as assessing injuries and illnesses, and applying bandaging and splinting techniques correctly.
The course is built around practice rather than theory. Expect to spend real time working through scenarios with a training manikin and fellow participants, developing the muscle memory that matters when a genuine emergency leaves no time to think things through from scratch. No previous experience is required, and the course is open to anyone regardless of diving background.
For divers, this course has an added significance: it fulfils the First Aid and CPR requirement for the PADI Rescue Diver and PADI Divemaster courses, so many people at Diving Academy complete it as a deliberate stepping stone on their way to those qualifications, while others take it purely for the everyday peace of mind it brings.
The process
How The Course Works

Step 1
Online Preparation
Work through the core concepts online at your own pace before your in-person day, so class time is spent practising rather than reading. It's flexible enough to fit around whatever else is going on in your week.

Step 2
Primary Care - CPR
Learn to assess a scene, perform CPR and respond to serious bleeding, shock and choking, building real confidence on a training mannequin under your instructor's guidance. These are the skills that matter most in the first critical minutes of an emergency.
PADI states Primary Care typically runs 4.5 to 6 hours.

Step 3
Secondary Care - First Aid
Move on to treating injuries and illnesses that aren't immediately life-threatening, practising bandaging, splinting and full emergency role-play scenarios. This combined certification is also what satisfies the first aid requirement for PADI Rescue Diver and Divemaster.
PADI states Secondary Care typically runs 2.5 to 3.5 hours.
