About This Course

The PADI Tec 40 Instructor course is where recreational instructors cross over into teaching technical diving, qualifying you to train the next generation of tec divers on open-circuit technical gear beyond recreational depth limits. Delivered over seven days at Diving Academy, the course is intensive by design, combining rigorous review of technical diving theory with extended in-water teaching practice so you leave able to run a genuinely demanding programme to a high standard.

Because Tec 40 sits at the entry point of PADI's TecRec instructor pathway, the prerequisites are correspondingly serious: you will need to already hold PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor or higher, along with PADI Enriched Air Diver Specialty Instructor and PADI Deep Diver Specialty Instructor ratings, plus a Tec 45 Diver certification. On the diving side, you will need 25 EANx dives deeper than 30 metres/100 feet and 10 decompression dives completed in full technical equipment, reflecting the depth of personal experience expected of anyone teaching this level.

The course itself builds your ability to brief, supervise and evaluate students working with stage cylinders, planned decompression and technical gas management, always with safety and precise procedure at the centre of every session. Full certification as a Tec 40 Instructor also requires certifying 25 divers and logging a minimum of 20 decompression dives as part of the application process.

From here, the natural progression is Tec 50 Instructor, extending your teaching range further into PADI's technical diving curriculum. For experienced instructors ready to specialise in technical training, Tec 40 Instructor is a serious and rewarding step.

The process

How The Course Works

  1. Step 1

    Instructor-Level Standards & Theory

Before you can teach it, you sharpen your own grasp of enriched air, deep diving and decompression theory to instructor standard, working through PADI's technical teaching procedures in detail. It's the knowledge foundation everything else in the course builds on.

PADI states: candidates need at least 25 enriched air dives deeper than 30 metres/100 feet and 10 decompression dives in full technical equipment to qualify.

  2. Step 2

    Teaching Practicum

You take the instructor's seat for confined and open water sessions, running the skills and safety drills you'll one day supervise as a Tec 40 student's teacher. Your trainer coaches your briefings, demonstrations and problem-solving until it all becomes second nature.

  3. Step 3

    Instructor Exam & Certification

The course closes with a formal exam on PADI's tec standards and procedures. Pass, and you're certified to run Discover Tec experiences and teach the Tec Basics and Tec 40 Diver courses to your own students.

PADI states: Tec 40 Instructors are qualified to conduct Discover Tec programmes and teach the Tec Basics and Tec 40 Diver courses.
