About This Course

Tec 50 is where technical diving moves into genuinely elite territory. Sold with us as a combined Tec 50 and Tec 50 Trimix Diver course, it takes divers beyond the limits set by Tec 45 and into deeper, more demanding decompression diving, using trimix to manage the physiological challenges that come with greater depth.

Across the two-day course you will sharpen advanced decompression procedures, refine dive planning to a genuinely elite standard, and put it all into practice on deep trimix dives that push meaningfully past what Tec 45 divers are trained for. The emphasis throughout is on precision: gas management, contingency planning, and the calm, methodical mindset that technical diving at this level demands.

Because of what is being asked of you underwater, the prerequisites are correspondingly serious. You will need to already hold PADI Tec 45 Diver certification, along with PADI Rescue Diver or an equivalent qualification and proof of CPR and First Aid training completed within the last two years. A minimum of one hundred logged dives or seventy-five hours underwater is required, you must be at least eighteen years old, and you will need a Diver Medical Form signed by a physician within the previous twelve months.

Training runs from our Reading base, with divers travelling in from across the region to take it on.

The process

How The Course Works

  1. Step 1

    Knowledge Development

You push further into decompression theory, now planning around two separate decompression gases and multiple staged stops. This is the level where technical diving stops being a variation on recreational diving and becomes its own discipline entirely.

  2. Step 2

    Practical Application

You rehearse managing multiple cylinders, gas switches and contingency procedures until juggling them under pressure feels manageable rather than overwhelming. At this depth, a calm, well-drilled routine is what keeps a dive on plan.

  3. Step 3

    Training Dives

You then take it to open water, executing extended range dives with your instructor and putting your multi-gas decompression planning into practice for real. It is a genuinely elite qualification, and one you earn dive by dive.

PADI states: extended range dives to a maximum of 50 metres/165 feet with multiple decompression stops using two decompression gases; prerequisites include Tec 45 Diver and Rescue Diver certification plus a minimum of 100 logged dives or 75 hours
