What to expect
PADI Delayed Surface Marker Buoy Instructor
Few skills matter more to a recreational diver than deploying a delayed surface marker buoy properly, and this one-day Specialty Instructor course qualifies you to teach it with real confidence, covering safe deployment, controlled ascents and troubleshooting problems that crop up mid-dive. Delivered instructor to instructor, the focus stays on making the skill land with your own students, and you'll walk away with ready-to-use teaching tips and a smart step toward Master Scuba Diver Trainer.
In detail
About This Course
The Delayed Surface Marker Buoy (DSMB) Instructor course is a PADI Specialty Instructor programme aimed at working dive professionals. It qualifies you to teach the DSMB Specialty independently, adding a genuinely useful, high-demand specialty to the courses you can offer, since surface marker buoy skills are among the most practically valuable a recreational diver can learn.
Over the course of a day, you will work through the standards and requirements for certifying DSMB divers, and pick up the teaching techniques that make this specialty land well with students, from safe deployment and controlled ascents to common problems and how to troubleshoot them mid-dive. Because it is delivered as a Specialty Instructor course, the emphasis throughout is on how to teach the skill effectively and safely, not simply on performing it yourself.
You will leave with practical, ready-to-use teaching tips and hands-on experience you can put into practice with your very next student, along with a clear understanding of the risk management considerations specific to this specialty.
This is a natural course for instructors and instructor-candidates at Diving Academy looking to broaden what they can teach. Each Specialty Instructor rating you add also counts toward the Master Scuba Diver Trainer rating, which requires five or more, making DSMB Instructor a practical and popular choice on that pathway.
The process
How The Course Works

Step 1
Standards & Flexible Delivery
You learn the exact standards behind deploying and using a DSMB - from an alerting toss at the surface to running a line for a safety stop in poor visibility or current - and how this specialty can slot into other courses rather than always standing alone.
PADI states: DSMB Diver requires a PADI Open Water Diver certification and a minimum age of 12.

Step 2
Coaching the Deployment
The practical focus is getting your future students to deploy a DSMB smoothly under real conditions, so you spend your time refining how you demonstrate and correct this one skill until it becomes second nature to teach.
