In detail
About This Course
The PADI Mermaid course brings a playful, imaginative dimension to underwater training, teaching participants to move through the water with the grace and control of a mermaid while learning real, transferable in-water skills. It is designed to deepen understanding of how the physical properties of the underwater world, such as buoyancy, resistance, and body position, affect movement, alongside routine, exhibition, and problem-handling skills used in mermaid swimming.
No previous diving experience is required, making this an accessible course for confident swimmers rather than certified divers. Participants need to be at least 10 years old, able to swim at least 50m/164ft without swim aids, and capable of floating comfortably at the surface for a minimum of five minutes, along with being in good general health. These requirements ensure everyone in the water has the basic comfort and stamina needed before adding a monofin and tail into the mix.
Training combines knowledge development with a minimum of two water skill sessions, where participants practise finning technique, breath control, and safe swimming routines under proper supervision. It is a genuinely different way to build water confidence and fitness, appealing to swimmers who want something more creative and expressive than traditional lane swimming or standard diving lessons.
For those who enjoy the course, the Advanced Mermaid rating is the natural next step, building on these foundations with more advanced routines and skills. It is a popular pathway for younger swimmers and adults alike who want an engaging, structured way to spend more time in the water.
The process
How The Course Works

Step 1
Mermaid Knowledge Development
You start by working through the physics behind why a mermaid tail moves the way it does - buoyancy, body position, and the water dynamics that separate a good undulation from a great one. It is independent study, so you go at whatever pace suits you before getting in the water.

Step 2
Water Skill Sessions
At least two pool sessions with your instructor take you well beyond Basic Mermaid, building the routine, exhibition and problem-handling skills that turn technical movement into genuine underwater performance.
PADI states: at least two water skill sessions, open to swimmers aged 10+ who can swim 50m and float for 5 minutes
