What to expect
Master Scuba Diver
Master Scuba Diver is the card every serious diver ultimately wants in their logbook, the recognised pinnacle of recreational diving. Reaching it means holding Rescue Diver certification, completing five PADI Specialty courses and logging at least fifty dives, built up progressively through Open Water, Advanced and Rescue training. Diving Academy can track exactly which certifications and dives you still need to get there.
In detail
About This Course
It recognises divers who have put in the time and training to become genuinely well-rounded, capable and experienced underwater, and it is available to divers training with Diving Academy in Reading and the surrounding areas.
To qualify, you need to be at least twelve years old, hold Rescue Diver or Junior Rescue Diver certification, have completed five PADI Specialty Diver courses, and have logged at least fifty dives. In practice this means the rating is built up progressively over your full Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver, Rescue Diver and five Specialty Diver courses, rather than being a single standalone class, so it rewards divers who commit to their development over time.
Along the way you will have tackled everything from navigation and deep diving to more specialised interests such as wreck, drift or night diving, giving you a genuinely broad and well-tested skill set rather than narrow expertise in just one area. That range is what makes Master Scuba Diver so respected among instructors and dive professionals.
Reaching Master Scuba Diver status marks you out as a serious, capable diver anywhere in the world, and for many it is also the point where the idea of turning diving into a career, through Divemaster or Instructor training, starts to feel like a realistic next step. Diving Academy can help track your existing certifications and plan out exactly which specialties and dives you still need.
The process
How The Course Works

Step 1
Your Core Certifications
Before anything else, you need PADI Advanced Open Water Diver and Rescue Diver already in your logbook. These two are non-negotiable foundations - the judgement and comfort in the water that everything else builds on.
PADI states: Master Scuba Diver requires Advanced Open Water Diver and Rescue Diver certification.

Step 2
Five Specialties, Your Choice
You then need five PADI Specialty Diver certifications, picked entirely on what interests you - wreck, night, deep, navigation, whatever pulls you in. It's less a checklist and more a chance to shape your own diving identity.
PADI states: at least five PADI Specialty Diver certifications are required.

Step 3
Fifty Dives & the Rating
The last piece is simply time in the water - fifty logged dives - after which the rating is awarded rather than taught, recognising everything you've already earned. You need to be at least 15 to hold it outright, with a Junior version available from age 12.
PADI states: a minimum of 50 logged dives is required, with a minimum age of 15 (Junior Master Scuba Diver from age 12).
