About This Course

The PADI IDC Staff Instructor rating is a respected step for experienced professionals who want to take a more active role in developing new PADI instructors. As an IDC Staff Instructor you work alongside a PADI Course Director, helping to deliver Instructor Development Courses and Assistant Instructor programmes.

This five day course is built for instructors who already hold Master Scuba Diver Trainer status and are ready to commit fully to the PADI System. You will study the instructor development process in depth, learning how candidates are trained, evaluated and coached through the standards and skills that define a good PADI instructor.

Much of the course focuses on practical teaching ability: how to run workshops, give clear and constructive feedback, present PADI theory sessions with confidence, and support candidates through the pressure of confined water and open water teaching presentations. You will also cover the administrative and quality assurance side of instructor training.

It is a natural fit for career instructors based at busy training centres like ours in Reading.

The process

How The Course Works

  1. Step 1

    Where You Really Stand

It starts with an honest preassessment of your instructor-level dive theory, your skills in the water and how you come across as a role model in front of a class. That gives your Course Director a clear picture of exactly where to focus your training.

  2. Step 2

    Instructor Development Standards & Curriculum

You go deep into the standards, procedures and curriculum behind instructor training, learning what it actually takes to organise and run an Assistant Instructor course of your own. This is the material that turns you from someone who teaches divers into someone who can train the next generation of instructors.

  3. Step 3

    Real Teaching Practice

You sit in on a live Instructor Development Course, or take the floor yourself to practise-teach curriculum components alongside a Course Director. It is hands-on rehearsal for the role you are about to step into.

PADI states: candidates audit an IDC, or practice-teach a number of its curriculum components, working alongside a Course Director.
