In detail
About This Course
Full face masks are increasingly used across recreational, commercial and public safety diving, offering improved communication, comfort and safety in demanding conditions. The PADI Full Face Mask Specialty Instructor course at Diving Academy is a one-day programme that qualifies you to teach this specialty to your own students.
You will learn how to organise and run sessions covering full face mask fit, communication systems, buddy checks, emergency procedures such as mask removal and switching to a backup regulator, and the situations where a full face mask offers a genuine advantage over a standard mask and regulator setup. The course also looks at how to present this specialty in a way that helps students understand exactly when and why it is worth learning.
Entry requires PADI Divemaster, Assistant Instructor or instructor-candidate status, as this is taken as a Specialty Instructor course, and as with other specialties there may be additional prerequisites or exit requirements to be aware of. You will leave with practical teaching tips and hands-on experience you can apply in your very next student session.
Once qualified, you can independently teach the Full Face Mask Specialty Diver course, opening up a valuable option for students moving into more specialised or professional diving environments. It also counts toward Master Scuba Diver Trainer status, making it a worthwhile addition for instructors at Diving Academy in Reading building a well-rounded specialty portfolio.
The process
How The Course Works

Step 1
Get Familiar With the Gear
Full face masks handle differently to a standard mask and regulator - clearing, communication and buddy checks all change - so you work through those differences yourself before you're asked to teach them. It matters because this gear is turning up well beyond recreational diving, in commercial and public safety work too.

Step 2
Teaching Practicum With Your Course Director
You'll practise the confined water session and the open water dives your students will complete, working out how to teach communication and troubleshooting through an unfamiliar mask. Once you're signed off, you can run the course for anyone from new divers to working professionals.
PADI states the student course applies knowledge development in a confined water session, followed by at least two open water dives.
