About This Course

The PADI Full Face Mask Diver Specialty course introduces divers to a different, increasingly popular way of breathing and communicating underwater. Unlike a standard mask and regulator setup, a full face mask covers the entire face and allows for clearer, more natural breathing, along with the option of integrated underwater communication systems, making it a favourite for divers who want extra comfort, or who dive in colder or more demanding conditions.

Run over two days, the course covers the practical differences between full face mask diving and traditional configurations, including equalisation techniques, mask removal and replacement procedures, and how to handle the equipment confidently if a problem arises. Divers also learn how the improved field of view and reduced jaw fatigue that a full face mask offers can make longer or more challenging dives noticeably more comfortable.

To take part, you will need to already hold PADI Open Water Diver certification and be at least 12 years old, meaning this specialty is accessible to newly certified divers as well as more experienced ones looking to try something different. It is a particularly good option for divers who have found standard mask clearing or cold-water breathing uncomfortable in the past.

The process

How The Course Works

Step 1
Equipment & Configuration Briefing
You start on dry land, working through how a full face mask is set up and configured so it fits you perfectly before you ever get it wet. Getting this right is most of the battle for comfortable, natural breathing underwater.
Step 2
Confined Water Session
Next you take the mask into a controlled confined water setting to build confidence with it - clearing it, communicating, and simply getting used to breathing through your nose as naturally as you do on the surface.
Step 3
Open Water Dives
With the basics second nature, you take the full face mask on at least two open water dives, putting its comfort and communication advantages to real use. Two days in, jaw fatigue and mask leaks are a thing of the past.
