Course overview
What to expect
Fish Identification
Every dive gets noticeably more interesting the moment you can put a name to what just swam past. Rather than drilling long species lists, this single-day course teaches you to recognise the main fish families by their shared shapes and behaviours, a framework that works on reefs anywhere in the world. You'll also sharpen your underwater observation, picking up on colouration and movement easy to miss when focused on buoyancy or navigation.
In detail
About This Course
Every dive becomes more interesting once you can put a name to what swims past, and the PADI Fish Identification specialty is designed to do exactly that. Run over a single day at Diving Academy, it turns a general love of marine life into a genuine, practical skill divers can use on every future dive.
The course teaches divers to recognise the main fish families found on typical dives, understanding the shared characteristics, body shapes and behaviours that make identification straightforward once you know what to look for. Rather than memorising long species lists, the focus is on building a framework divers can apply anywhere in the world.
Divers also develop sharper observation skills underwater, learning to notice detail, colouration and movement that often gets missed when attention is focused purely on buoyancy or navigation.
Open to PADI Junior Open Water Divers aged ten and over, Fish Identification is a natural complement to specialties such as Peak Performance Buoyancy and Underwater Naturalist, and adds real depth to every dive log entry from here on.
The process
How The Course Works

Step 1
Fish Groups & Families
Rather than memorising endless species lists, you'll learn to sort what you see into a handful of recognisable groups covering the main fish families found on a typical dive. Suddenly a reef full of unfamiliar shapes starts making sense.

Step 2
Two Identification Dives
Then you take that knowledge underwater, spotting and naming species as you go and even learning how to run a simple fish survey to gauge what's really living on a site. Two dives in, you'll never look at a reef the same way again.
