Course overview
What to expect
Enriched Air (Nitrox) Instructor
Nitrox is often the very first specialty a newly certified diver ever takes, which makes this one of the smartest additions to your teaching credentials. This one-day course prepares you to organise, promote and confidently deliver the Enriched Air Diver Specialty, extending students' no-decompression limits and reducing fatigue on repetitive dives. Open to Divemasters, Assistant Instructors and instructor candidates, and one of the most consistently requested specialties in recreational diving.
In detail
About This Course
Enriched air, or nitrox, is one of the most widely used specialties in recreational diving, and for good reason - it extends no-decompression limits and can reduce fatigue on repetitive dives. The Enriched Air (Nitrox) Diver Specialty Instructor Training course prepares PADI professionals to teach this popular specialty properly, covering how to organise, promote, and conduct it for student divers.
Because enriched air is often one of the first specialties a newly certified diver takes, instructors who hold this rating are well placed to build lasting relationships with divers early in their diving journey. The course is taken as a Specialty Instructor course and is open to those with PADI Divemaster, Assistant Instructor, or instructor-candidate status; as with other specialties, some additional prerequisites and exit requirements may apply depending on individual circumstances.
Training is practical and immediately applicable. You will come away with teaching tips and hands-on experience that you can put to use right away when running your first enriched air course. The emphasis throughout is on helping instructors understand not just the theory of nitrox diving, but how to communicate its value clearly and confidently to students.
Since enriched air is one of the most commonly requested specialties, adding it to your teaching repertoire is a sound investment in your career. It also counts toward Master Scuba Diver Trainer status, which requires five or more PADI Specialty Instructor certifications, making this course a useful early building block for instructors working toward that rating.
The process
How The Course Works

Step 1
Hold the Certification You'll Teach
You can't teach enriched air diving without already being enriched air certified yourself, so that qualification needs to be in your logbook before training starts. It's worth having anyway - this is PADI's single most popular specialty, which makes it one of the highest-demand credentials you can add.
PADI requires applicants to already hold an Enriched Air Diver certification, and describes Enriched Air as its most popular specialty course.

Step 2
Teaching Practicum With Your Course Director
You'll work through gas analysis, MOD calculations and cylinder labelling until explaining them feels second nature, then practise presenting the material the way a first-time nitrox diver actually needs to hear it. Once your Course Director signs off, you can teach the specialty most divers take first.
