What to expect
Dive Against Debris (Mermaid)
Slip into your monofin and do something that actually matters for the ocean, not just look good doing it. This combines the graceful swimming you love with a genuine marine conservation survey, removing rubbish from a real dive site while learning where debris comes from and how professional surveys are structured. Suitable from Advanced Mermaid, Junior Open Water Diver or Freediver level and open from age ten.
In detail
About This Course
The Dive Against Debris Mermaid specialty brings together two things Diving Academy students love: mermaid swimming and looking after the underwater world. Working in your monofin under instructor guidance, you take part in a genuine debris survey, removing rubbish from a dive site while learning why this simple action matters so much for marine health.
Before getting in the water you will cover the basics of marine debris: where it comes from, how it harms marine life and dive sites over time, and why divers are uniquely placed to do something about it. You will also learn how professional debris surveys are structured, so the data collected is genuinely useful rather than just a tidy-up.
In the water, you will practise weighing, sorting and recording everything you collect, then learn how it should be reported and disposed of responsibly afterwards. Every item logged feeds into Project AWARE's global marine debris database, so your local survey becomes part of a much bigger picture used by scientists and policy makers worldwide.
It is a short, satisfying course that works equally well as a first taste of conservation diving or as an addition to an existing Mermaid certification, and it leaves you with a real sense of having made a difference, not just splashed about in a tail.
The process
How The Course Works

Step 1
Dive Against Debris eLearning
A short online lesson covers the different types of marine debris and how the survey data you collect feeds into PADI AWARE's global reporting database, so your local cleanup adds up to something bigger.
PADI states: the Dive Against Debris specialty now includes eLearning as part of the course

Step 2
The Debris Survey
In your monofin and tail, you carry out an actual debris removal and survey, logging everything you find so it counts toward the same global database used by scuba divers and freedivers everywhere.
PADI states: open to PADI Advanced Mermaid divers and counted as a one-dive specialty
