What to expect

Deep Diver

There's a whole different world waiting below standard recreational limits, and this specialty is your properly trained way in, extending your range to 40 metres over two immersive days. You'll learn to plan conservative time and depth limits, manage gas consumption as it climbs, and recognise the subtle effects of nitrogen narcosis before they catch you out. A favourite step toward Master Scuba Diver, and it pairs brilliantly with Enriched Air training.

About This Course

The PADI Deep Diver specialty takes you beyond the standard recreational depth limits most divers train to, extending your range to 40 metres/130 feet. Deeper water brings genuine changes in how a dive feels and behaves, and this course is built around understanding and managing those changes safely.

You will learn how to plan a deep dive properly, from setting conservative time and depth limits to managing your gas supply more carefully as consumption increases with depth. Recognising and handling nitrogen narcosis is a central theme, since even experienced divers can be caught off guard by its subtle effects if they are not trained to watch for them.

Buoyancy control gets noticeably harder as depth increases, so the course places real emphasis on staying neutrally buoyant and in close contact with your buddy throughout the dive, along with the communication and contingency planning that keeps a deep dive running smoothly.

Spread across two days of dives, the Deep Diver specialty is a popular choice among divers building toward their Master Scuba Diver rating, and it pairs naturally with Enriched Air training to extend bottom time even further.

The process

How The Course Works

  1. Step 1

    Knowledge Development

Before you go deep, you build the theory that keeps deep diving safe - gas management, dive planning and recognising the effects of nitrogen narcosis. Work through it at your own pace, ready to put straight into practice underwater.

  2. Step 2

    Deep Dive Planning & Equipment

Your instructor walks you through the specialised kit and buddy procedures deep diving demands, from managing a shrinking gas supply to staying in constant contact with your buddy at depth. It's the groundwork that turns a deeper dive from a risk into a well-managed adventure.

  3. Step 3

Four Deep Dives to 40 Metres

This is where the theory becomes real. Across four dives with your instructor you'll progressively extend your depth, sharpening your buoyancy control and learning to spot the first signs of narcosis in yourself, until you're certified to explore down to 40 metres.

PADI states: four dives with your instructor, extending your depth range to a maximum of 40 metres/130ft
