What to expect

Coral Reef Conservation Instructor

If you're a PADI Assistant Instructor or Instructor who wants students to leave the water caring about what they just swam through, this specialty is built for you, teaching precise buoyancy control around fragile coral and the everyday choices that protect reefs rather than damage them. The rating is granted automatically the moment you hold Assistant Instructor status or above, no separate exam, just a meaningful, low-effort addition to your credentials.

About This Course

Coral reefs are among the most fragile and most visited environments in diving, and the Coral Reef Conservation Specialty Instructor course is about giving those environments a fighting chance. This is a course built for PADI professionals who want their students to leave the water not just having seen a reef, but understanding how to protect one.

As a Coral Reef Conservation Instructor, you'll be equipped to teach divers the reef-friendly skills and awareness that make the biggest practical difference underwater - buoyancy discipline around delicate coral structures, an understanding of how reef ecosystems function and why they're under pressure, and the everyday choices divers can make, both in and out of the water, that support reef health rather than undermine it.

One of the appealing things about this specialty is how it's structured within the PADI system: for anyone who is already a PADI Assistant Instructor or Instructor, the Coral Reef Conservation specialty instructor rating is granted automatically at that level, so there's no separate practical exam to schedule. It's simply a case of confirming your existing rating and adding the specialty to your teaching credentials.

We run this course from our Reading centre, and it's a genuinely worthwhile addition for any instructor who dives regularly on reef systems, whether locally trained divers are heading off to tropical destinations or you're building toward a broader specialty teaching portfolio.

The process

How The Course Works

  1. Step 1

    Teaching Rights & Free Materials

As a teaching-status Assistant Instructor or Instructor, you're already automatically qualified to run this AWARE specialty, and the teaching materials come free through the AWARE Online Teaching Hub, so there's no extra outlay before you start.

PADI states: teaching-status Assistant Instructors and Instructors are automatically eligible to teach Coral Reef Conservation, with materials free via the AWARE Online Teaching Hub.

  2. Step 2

    Running a Dry, Fins-Off Session

Because this course needs no water time, you learn to deliver it as a single focused morning or afternoon session, pitched so it works just as well for a curious non-diver as it does for one of your certified regulars.

PADI states: the Coral Reef Conservation course is dry and fins-off, completed in a single morning or afternoon, and open to non-divers.
