What to expect
Coral Reef Conservation
You do not need a wetsuit, a certification card or even the ability to swim to fall properly in love with coral reefs, just curiosity. This hands-on, entirely non-diving course takes you inside the ecosystems that cover a sliver of the ocean floor yet support around a quarter of all marine life. Delivered in the classroom, it's open to absolute beginners and seasoned divers alike, and the perfect primer before a reef holiday.
In detail
About This Course
Coral reefs cover a tiny fraction of the ocean floor yet support around a quarter of all marine life, and they are under more pressure than ever from warming seas, pollution and careless human contact. The PADI Coral Reef Conservation course exists to close the gap between admiring a reef and understanding it, giving you the knowledge to become an active advocate for its survival.
This is a classroom and knowledge-based course, so there is no requirement to dive, snorkel or even get in the water. That makes it genuinely open to anyone with an interest in the ocean, from complete beginners to experienced divers who want to deepen their understanding of the ecosystems they visit.
Over the course you will explore how coral reefs are built and structured, why they matter far beyond their own boundaries, and the surprising ways they protect coastlines and support fish populations and human communities alike. You will also look honestly at the threats reefs face today and, importantly, what practical, everyday actions actually make a difference.
Run by our PADI 5 Star Instructor Development Centre team in Reading, this course is a great starting point before travelling to reef destinations, and it pairs naturally with the Coral Reef Restoration Distinctive Specialty for anyone who wants to move from learning about reefs to actively helping restore them.
The process
How The Course Works

Step 1
One Session, No Water Needed
Across a single morning or afternoon, with no wetsuit and no swimming ability required, you get into exactly how a coral reef is built, cell by cell, and why it ends up supporting such an outsized share of ocean life. You also cover, honestly, why so many reefs are now in trouble and what actions genuinely help slow that decline.
PADI states: no prerequisites, age restrictions or in-water sessions; completed in a single morning or afternoon
