Compressor Awareness
Ever wondered where the air in your cylinder actually comes from? This practical one-day course, developed by our Course Director, walks you through exactly how a scuba compressor draws in, compresses and filters air to produce breathing-quality gas, why regular testing is non-negotiable, and what proper filling procedure looks like. It's not a technician qualification, but delivers a genuinely useful grounding most training never touches.
In detail
About This Course
Compressor Awareness is a practical, behind-the-scenes course that answers a question most divers never think to ask: where does the air in my cylinder actually come from? Developed by our Course Director, it takes you beyond the dive centre counter and into the compressor room to see exactly how breathing air is produced, filtered and tested.
You will learn how a scuba compressor draws in and compresses air through multiple filtration stages, removing moisture, oil and particulates to produce breathing-quality gas, and why regular air quality testing matters so much for diver safety. The course also covers the basics of cylinder filling procedure, including the checks that should happen before, during and after every fill.
Safety awareness runs through the whole course. You will learn to recognise the warning signs of poor air quality, understand why correct compressor intake placement and maintenance schedules exist, and appreciate the hazards, such as carbon monoxide contamination, that proper procedures are designed to prevent.
This is not a technician qualification, but it gives keen divers, especially those thinking about working in the industry, a genuinely useful grounding in an area most training never touches, and a much better understanding of the equipment their diving depends on.
The process
How The Course Works

Step 1
Behind the Cylinder
In a single practical day you'll get hands-on with the compressor itself, learning how it draws in, filters and compresses air safely up to diving pressures. You'll leave understanding exactly where the air in your cylinder comes from and what it takes to run a fill station safely.
