What to expect
Boat Handler
There's a particular kind of confidence that comes from knowing you can bring a dive boat alongside smoothly, launch it without drama, and handle whatever conditions throw at you, and that's precisely what two days on this course builds. You'll spend real time at the helm working through pre-departure checks, launching and recovery, docking and navigation, plus man overboard drills and calm decision-making, turning guesswork into genuine competence.
In detail
About This Course
The Boat Handler course gives divers and dive professionals the practical, on-the-water skills needed to operate a dive boat safely and confidently. Run over two days at Diving Academy, it takes the guesswork out of launching, manoeuvring and docking a boat, skills that are just as valuable for weekend boat owners as they are for those supporting a busy dive centre.
Sessions combine short theory briefings with plenty of time actually at the helm, covering pre-departure checks, safe launching and recovery, and confident docking and coming alongside in a range of conditions. Divers also learn basic on-water navigation, how to read tides and local hazards, and how to keep passengers and divers safe throughout a trip.
Emergency preparedness runs through the whole course, including man overboard drills and the decision making needed to respond calmly if something goes wrong at sea.
Boat Handler is a genuinely useful addition for anyone who dives regularly from boats, and a particularly valuable skill set for divers working toward professional ratings such as Divemaster, where confidently supporting boat operations is often part of the job.
The process
How The Course Works

Step 1
Boat Handling Fundamentals
You start with the theory - navigation rules, safety procedures, and how weather and sea state should change the way you approach a dive site. It's the groundwork that makes everything you do at the helm feel deliberate rather than reactive.

Step 2
Time at the Helm
You then get proper hands-on practice bringing the boat alongside, launching and recovering it, and manoeuvring in the kind of conditions you'll actually meet on a real dive day. By the end, you're handling the boat with the same confidence you already bring underwater.
