Basic Mermaid
Watch your child's face light up the moment they slip on a monofin and glide through the water like the character from their favourite story. Designed for confident young swimmers aged six and up, this playful pool session blends real water safety fundamentals with the joy of finning, gliding and controlled surface swimming, guided by PADI Professionals. No previous experience is needed, and it's the perfect introduction before the full PADI Mermaid Course.

About This Course
Basic Mermaid is the perfect first splash into mermaid swimming for children aged six and up, combining playful pool time with genuine water safety fundamentals. Delivered by PADI Professionals at Diving Academy in Reading, the programme introduces youngsters to the world of mermaid diving in a relaxed, encouraging environment.
Sessions begin with an age-appropriate look at the history and culture behind mermaid swimming, before moving into the safety considerations that keep every session enjoyable and secure. Young swimmers are then fitted with a monofin and guided through the basics of finning, gliding and controlled surface swimming.
Throughout the course, instructors focus on building water confidence as much as technique, helping children feel comfortable and capable while they learn to move like a mermaid. No previous experience is required beyond a basic level of swimming and surface floating ability.
Basic Mermaid is a natural stepping stone to the full PADI Mermaid Course, where young divers can continue building skills and spend more time exploring underwater in their tail. It is an ideal introduction for water-loving kids and a memorable family activity.
The process
How The Course Works
Step 1
Mermaid Knowledge & Safety
Before the fins go on, your child covers the background and culture of mermaiding, the safety considerations that matter most, and how the equipment works, simple, practical knowledge that makes the water time that follows feel completely natural.
Step 2
Pool Skills Session
Then it's into the pool for a proper skills session, mastering fundamental mermaid swimming and breath-holding technique with the monofin, building confidence one stroke at a time under close supervision.
PADI requires participants to be at least six years old, able to swim 25m/80ft unaided and float for 3 minutes.
