What to expect

Dive Against Debris

Give your diving a real purpose beyond the dive itself. This turns an ordinary outing into an active contribution to global ocean conservation, teaching you to plan and run a debris survey dive, identifying, removing and logging marine debris using the same methodology that feeds PADI AWARE's worldwide data. It's refreshingly accessible too, and it even counts as an Adventure Dive toward Advanced Open Water Diver.

About This Course

The PADI AWARE Dive Against Debris Specialty course turns an ordinary dive into a genuine contribution to ocean conservation. Over one day at Diving Academy, you will learn how to plan and carry out a structured debris survey dive, identifying, safely removing and accurately reporting the marine debris you find, using the same data-collection approach that feeds into PADI AWARE's global conservation efforts.

Rather than simply picking up litter, the course teaches a proper survey methodology, so the data you gather actually contributes to a worldwide picture of marine debris and helps inform conservation action. You will take part in a Dive Against Debris survey dive under instructor guidance, putting the identification and reporting skills into practice in real conditions, and coming away with a much sharper eye for what is happening beneath the surface of the sites you dive regularly.

The course is refreshingly accessible: you need only a PADI Junior Open Water Diver certification or equivalent, and a minimum age of 10, making it a great option for younger divers and families wanting to dive with real purpose.

Dive Against Debris also counts as an Adventure Dive toward the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification, so it is an easy and meaningful way to keep progressing your diving while giving something back. For divers of any age who want their diving to matter beyond the dive itself, this is one of the most satisfying specialties Diving Academy offers.

The process

How The Course Works

  1. Step 1

    Digital eLearning

You start with a short online course covering why marine debris matters, how it's tracked, and the survey method you'll use underwater. It's a quick, focused learning block rather than a heavy academic module.

PADI states: the total time commitment for the course, including eLearning, is around 2-4 hours.

  2. Step 2

    Survey & Clean-Up Dive

In the water, you run a proper debris survey - logging what you find, how much, and where - before clearing it out safely. Every survey you submit feeds a genuine global database that researchers use to track the state of marine debris worldwide.
