About This Course

For anyone who's already fallen in love with mermaid swimming, Advanced Mermaid is the natural next step - taking the pool-based skills of a basic mermaid certification and moving them into open water, where movement, buoyancy and awareness all work a little differently. It's a course built for confident swimmers who want to develop real, transferable in-water competence, not just a monofin and a costume.

The course covers rescue techniques specific to mermaid swimming, controlled ascents and descents that mirror the discipline taught in scuba training, and the confidence to move comfortably and safely through natural aquatic conditions rather than the predictable environment of a pool. It's a genuinely skills-focused programme, and one that translates well for anyone who later goes on to try scuba diving too.

Before getting in the water, students work through the PADI Advanced Mermaid eLearning independently, which takes around three to four hours to complete and lays the theoretical groundwork for the in-water sessions that follow.

To take part you'll need to be able to swim at least 100 metres or 320 feet without the use of aids, and be able to float comfortably at the surface for at least ten minutes - a reasonable baseline that reflects the open water setting rather than a pool. It's a single training day that opens up a whole new side of mermaid swimming for confident, water-comfortable candidates.

The process

How The Course Works

  1. Step 1

    Advanced Mermaid eLearning

Before you get back in the water, a self-paced online course brings you up to speed on everything that changes once you leave the pool - current, depth, visibility and how it all affects a mermaid tail. Finish it on your own schedule, ready before your open water sessions begin.

PADI states: open to PADI Mermaid certified swimmers aged 12+ who can swim 100m and float for 10 minutes

  2. Step 2

    Open Water Mermaid Sessions

Everything you built in the pool gets tested in a real body of water, with your instructor guiding you through rescue-ready awareness, controlled buoyancy and confident movement once the bottom is out of reach. Two dedicated sessions turn your Mermaid skills into something you can trust anywhere.

PADI states: two additional sessions in open water beyond the PADI Mermaid course syllabus
