What to expect

Adaptive Techniques Instructor

Open up diving to every student who walks through your door, not just the ones who fit a standard template. This one-day instructor course teaches you to read individual needs, adapt equipment and communication, and reshape briefings and pool and open water sessions so divers with physical, sensory or cognitive differences can train safely toward their own goals. It's genuinely in-demand and counts toward Master Scuba Diver Trainer status.

About This Course

The PADI Adaptive Techniques Specialty Instructor course prepares experienced PADI professionals to open diving up to a wider range of students by teaching them how to adjust equipment, communication and in-water technique for divers with physical, sensory or cognitive differences. It is a one-day course at Diving Academy designed specifically for instructors who already hold a current teaching status.

Rather than treating adaptive diving as a niche add-on, the course reframes inclusive teaching as a core professional skill. You will work through practical strategies for assessing individual student needs, modifying gear configurations, adapting briefings and demonstrations, and structuring pool and open water sessions so that divers of all abilities can train safely and confidently towards their own goals.

To join, you need to hold a PADI Instructor rating in Scuba, Tec, Mermaid or Freediving, or be currently enrolled in or have completed an IDC or OWSI within the last twelve months. This keeps the course focused on teaching technique for instructors who are already comfortable running certification programmes, rather than covering entry-level instructional skills.

Completing the Adaptive Techniques Specialty Instructor course lets you teach the Adaptive Techniques Specialty to your own students and adds a genuinely useful, in-demand rating to your instructor toolkit. It also counts toward the five specialties needed for Master Scuba Diver Trainer status, making it a smart choice for instructors building out their teaching portfolio at Diving Academy in Reading.

The process

How The Course Works

  1. Step 1

    Prerequisites and Readiness

You will already need real leadership experience behind you before starting - this course builds on what you have learned as a Divemaster or Master Freediver, not on first principles. A recent EFR Primary and Secondary Care update keeps your safety training current too.

PADI states candidates must be a PADI Divemaster or Master Freediver (or higher) with EFR Primary and Secondary Care training completed within 24 months.

  2. Step 2

    Adapting Your Teaching

You work through student-centred approaches for adapting equipment, communication and technique to genuinely different needs, rather than forcing every student through the same template. It is a shift in mindset as much as a set of new skills.

  3. Step 3

    Two Courses, One Certification

Pass this course and you walk away qualified to teach two things at once - the Adaptive Techniques specialty to fellow PADI professionals, and the Adaptive Support Diver specialty directly to divers.

PADI states completing this course qualifies you to teach both the Adaptive Techniques Specialty to PADI professionals and the Adaptive Support Diver Specialty to divers.
