What to expect
Adaptive Techniques
Diving should never be limited by what someone's body or mind can do, and this specialty puts that belief into practice. Built for experienced dive professionals ready to adapt their teaching, it moves beyond theory into confined and open-water workshops, adapting communication, equipment and in-water support to real students with real needs. Few certifications carry this much meaning, or this much respect.
In detail
About This Course
The Adaptive Techniques specialty trains experienced dive professionals to teach and support divers with physical or mental challenges, making diving genuinely accessible to a wider range of people. It is a specialty built around adaptive teaching strategies - practical, considered approaches to adjusting communication, equipment configuration, and in-water assistance so that divers with varying abilities can train safely and confidently.
This course is aimed at experienced dive professionals rather than newly certified divers: candidates must already hold a PADI Divemaster, Master Freediver, or Advanced Mermaid rating, along with a current EFR Primary and Secondary Care certification obtained within the last 24 months. That level of prerequisite reflects the responsibility involved in adapting teaching methods safely and effectively for individual students.
Training combines instructor-led classroom learning with practical confined-water and open-water dive workshops, giving candidates the chance to put adaptive strategies into practice rather than simply studying them in theory. Topics typically include assessing individual student needs, adjusting standard teaching progressions, and working alongside students, buddies, and support staff to make sure every dive is both safe and rewarding.
Delivered at The Diving Academy's training centre in Reading, this specialty reflects a genuine commitment to inclusive diving.
The process
How The Course Works

Step 1
Student-Centred Teaching
You explore two ways of adapting a course - reading what an individual diver needs in the moment, and planning adaptations in advance around a known condition. It shifts your teaching from a fixed script to something built around the person in front of you.

Step 2
Adaptations That Work in the Water
You put those approaches into practice, working out how a small change to a skill or exercise can let far more divers meet the performance requirements and get certified. It is hands-on problem-solving that makes you a genuinely more capable instructor.
