About This Course

Wrecks are some of the most captivating dive sites anywhere, and teaching divers how to explore them safely and respectfully is a genuinely rewarding specialty to add to your instructor credentials. The PADI Wreck Diver Specialty Instructor course at Diving Academy is a one-day programme focused on giving you the skills to organise, promote and confidently deliver this course to your own students.

You will look at how to structure wreck diving theory and skills sessions, covering safe penetration limits, line and reel use, hazard awareness around unstable structures and entanglement, and how to plan dives that respect both diver safety and the wrecks themselves as historical or ecological sites. The course also emphasises how to communicate the value of specialty training, helping your students see wreck diving as a skill built up progressively rather than rushed into.

To take the course you need PADI Assistant Instructor status, to be an instructor candidate in training, or to hold PADI Divemaster certification, with some specialties carrying additional prerequisites. You will benefit from teaching tips and hands-on experience passed on directly from your local PADI Course Director.

Once certified, you can run the Wreck Diver Specialty independently, tapping into one of the most consistently popular specialties among recreational divers. It also counts toward the five specialty instructor certifications needed for Master Scuba Diver Trainer status, a valuable long-term goal for instructors at Diving Academy in Reading.

The process

How The Course Works

  1. Step 1

    Wreck Survey & Mapping Teaching

You learn to teach the safety considerations that come with exploring wrecks, plus how to survey and map a wreck so a student comes away with a genuine record of what they've seen rather than a vague memory.

PADI's diver-level Wreck Diver course covers wreck safety, surveying and mapping over four dives

  2. Step 2

    Penetration Line Techniques & Certification

You also cover how to teach the use of penetration lines and reels that guide safe exploration, including the judgement calls around when a wreck is best admired from the outside instead. Complete the day and you're certified to run the Wreck Diver specialty at your own centre.
