About This Course

Whales are among the ocean's most awe-inspiring and vulnerable animals, and the PADI Whale Defender Specialty is your chance to do something practical about their protection. Run as a half-day course at Diving Academy, it is built for divers who want their time underwater to leave a positive mark, whether they ever come face to face with a whale or not.

Through the course you will learn how whales are threatened by entanglement, ship strikes, noise pollution and habitat disturbance, and what divers, boat operators and coastal communities can do to reduce that impact. You will come away understanding how to dive and behave responsibly around marine megafauna, and how to spot and report threats when you see them.

What makes this specialty stand out is where the money goes: every penny of profit from the course is channelled into marine park enforcement and local whale conservation work, so signing up is a direct contribution to protection efforts rather than just a certification card. It suits any certified diver, from newly qualified Open Water Divers through to seasoned professionals, and slots neatly alongside other conservation-minded specialties.

No previous specialty experience is required, and there are no extra prerequisites beyond your existing certification, so it is an easy and meaningful addition to any diver's logbook. Contact Diving Academy in Reading to find the next available date and join a growing community of divers speaking up for whales.

The process

How The Course Works

  1. Step 1

A Half-Day With the Gentle Giants

In one half-day, knowledge-based session, you work through the long and complicated relationship between people and whales, why healthy whale populations matter for the whole ocean, and the very real dangers they face today, from fishing gear entanglement to boat strikes. You finish with a clear sense of the citizen science efforts you can join afterwards to keep helping.
