About This Course

Photos capture a moment, but video captures the whole story, and the PADI Underwater Videographer specialty teaches you how to tell that story well. Designed for divers who already own or are curious about video equipment, this course moves you beyond simply pointing a camera and pressing record.

Over two days you will learn how to plan and frame shots that are genuinely interesting and entertaining to watch, understanding how movement, lighting and subject choice all affect the final result underwater. You will practise capturing usable clips in real dive conditions, where visibility, current and buoyancy all add extra challenge compared to filming on land.

The course does not stop once you surface. You will also learn practical editing techniques to turn raw footage into a polished clip worth sharing, whether that is with dive buddies, on social media, or as a lasting record of a memorable trip.

Open to certified junior and adult divers alike, the Underwater Videographer specialty is a rewarding way to combine a love of diving with a creative skill, and it pairs naturally with photography-focused specialties for divers who want to document the underwater world from every angle.

The process

How The Course Works

  1. Step 1

    Camera Fundamentals

Before you shoot a single frame underwater, your instructor walks you through choosing, setting up and caring for your camera or housing, then into the basics that separate a good clip from a forgettable one - exposure, focus and building a proper story line. It is as much about thinking like a film-maker as it is about handling the kit.

PADI states: open to (Junior) Open Water Divers from age 10

  2. Step 2

    Filming Dives

Now you put the theory to work underwater, framing and sequencing real footage alongside your instructor across the course. You learn to plan a shot before you take it, so what you bring back actually tells a story rather than just recording a dive.

  3. Step 3

    Editing Your Story

Back on the surface, the real craft begins. Your instructor guides you through the editing process itself, cutting your footage down into something worth watching again - and worth sharing.
