What to expect
Underwater Navigator
Tired of relying on a dive guide just to find your way back to the boat? This course hands you the skills to do it yourself over two days that go well beyond the basic navigation in Open Water Diver, sharpening natural observation and precision compass work, running headings, reciprocal courses and search patterns. Open to certified divers aged ten and up, and it pairs perfectly with Night Diver.
In detail
About This Course
Getting from A to B underwater, and finding your way back again, is one of the most practical skills a diver can master, and the PADI Underwater Navigator course is dedicated entirely to it. Over two days, divers move well beyond basic Open Water Diver navigation into genuinely reliable, repeatable techniques.
The course sharpens observation skills, teaching divers to read natural cues such as light, sand ripples, depth and topography to build a mental map of a dive site as they go. Alongside this, divers develop real precision with a compass, learning to run accurate headings, reciprocal courses and square or triangular search patterns underwater.
Combining natural and compass navigation gives divers the confidence to lead a buddy team, explore a site more independently, and return to a boat, shore entry point or point of interest without relying on a dive guide.
Open to certified PADI Open Water Divers aged ten and over, Underwater Navigator is a popular route toward PADI Advanced Open Water Diver and Master Scuba Diver, and pairs naturally with specialties such as Night Diver, where good navigation becomes even more valuable.
The process
How The Course Works

Step 1
Reading the Underwater Landscape
You start with the tools of the trade, from natural navigation clues like sand ripples and light direction to proper compass technique. It's the foundation for finding your own way instead of trailing the group.

Step 2
Compass Skills in the Water
In confined water and on early dives, you practise estimating distance and holding compass headings through a sequence of turns, building the muscle memory that makes navigation automatic rather than a moment of panic.

Step 3
Three Certification Dives
Across three dives you put it all together, marking and relocating a submerged object from the surface and sketching an underwater map of the site. Finish this one and you've also ticked off one of the five specialties needed for Master Scuba Diver.
PADI states: three dives, including at least five compass turns, marking/relocating a submerged object, and underwater map making
