What to expect

PADI Ice Diver Instructor

Ice diving is one of the most demanding overhead environments in the sport, a solid ceiling, a single exit point, water just above freezing, which is exactly why instructors who can teach it properly are so highly regarded. You'll master briefing on line-tending, site selection, cutting the entry hole and organising a surface support team, plus equipment behaviour in near-freezing water and lost-line drills, a genuinely specialised addition to your portfolio.

About This Course

Ice diving is one of the most demanding overhead environments a diver can enter, a solid ceiling with a single exit point, near-freezing water and the need for a tightly coordinated surface support team. The PADI Ice Diver Instructor course prepares experienced dive professionals to teach this specialty properly, passing on the discipline and procedures that keep ice diving safe rather than merely exciting.

You will work through the standards and structure of the PADI Ice Diver course from an instructor's perspective, covering how to brief students on line-tending and rope-pull signal communication, how to select and prepare a site, cut and manage the entry hole, and organise a surface team so that every diver under the ice has a clear, monitored line back to safety at all times.

Equipment considerations get particular attention, since regulators, dry suits and exposure protection all behave differently in near-freezing water, and an instructor needs to anticipate cold-related equipment issues before they become emergencies. You will also cover emergency procedures specific to an overhead, cold-water environment, including lost-line drills and managing a diver in distress under the ice.

Once certified, you can run PADI Ice Diver courses for your own students in suitable conditions, adding a genuinely specialised skill set to your instructor portfolio and moving another step closer to Master Scuba Diver Trainer status.

The process

How The Course Works

  1. Step 1

    Arrive Already Ice Certified

You need your own Ice Diver certification in hand before training to teach it - PADI doesn't let you teach an overhead environment you haven't already handled yourself. It's a genuinely growing credential, too, as more divers go looking for it every season.

PADI requires Ice Diver Instructor applicants to already hold a PADI Ice Diver certification, or a recognised equivalent.

  2. Step 2

    Teaching Practicum Under the Ice

You'll work through line handling, tender communication and emergency procedures from the teaching side this time, learning how to brief and supervise students through a single-exit, near-freezing environment. Sign off with your Course Director and you're cleared to run one of diving's most demanding specialties.
