Become the instructor who trains the buddies that make adaptive diving genuinely possible. This one-day PADI Specialty Instructor course teaches you to run the Adaptive Support Diver rating, turning willing dive buddies into confident in-water partners who can brief, position and assist adaptive divers through every stage of a dive. Building on your Adaptive Techniques Instructor knowledge, you'll leave with a standards-based programme ready to teach, plus a step closer to Master Scuba Diver Trainer status.
In detail
About This Course
Adaptive diving opens the underwater world to people with a huge range of physical, developmental, cognitive and sensory abilities, and much of what makes it work in practice is a well-trained, confident dive buddy. The PADI Adaptive Support Diver Instructor course prepares experienced PADI Professionals to teach exactly that role, certifying divers who can competently assist an adaptive dive buddy in the water.
The course covers how to brief, position and physically assist an adaptive diver through entries, exits and the dive itself, along with how to adapt communication and problem management for the buddy pair. Rather than training instructors to teach divers with disabilities directly, which is covered by the separate Adaptive Techniques Instructor course, this specialty focuses specifically on preparing capable, reliable support divers.
Because it builds directly on the PADI Adaptive Techniques Instructor Specialty, candidates arrive already familiar with the wider principles of adaptive dive instruction, and this course sharpens that knowledge into a teachable, standards-based rating. It is a valuable addition for instructors who want to make their dive centre a genuinely welcoming, capable option for adaptive divers and their buddies.
Completing this specialty adds another certification toward Master Scuba Diver Trainer status and reflects a genuine, practical commitment to inclusive diving, rather than a box-ticking qualification.
The process
How The Course Works

Step 1
Coaching the Buddy Role
You learn how to train willing buddies to properly support a diver with a physical challenge - helping them into and out of the water, managing their equipment and guiding them safely at depth. It is hands-on, practical instruction built around real assistance skills rather than theory alone.
PADI states this training covers skills such as helping a diver enter and exit the water, assisting with equipment, and guiding them at depth.

Step 2
Certified to Teach It
Once you have completed the specialty instructor training, you are authorised to run the Adaptive Support Diver course yourself. You will be turning willing buddies into genuinely capable dive partners, opening up diving to people who might otherwise be left on the boat.
