What to expect

Night Diver Instructor

Switch off the torches, wait for the light to fade, and a familiar dive site becomes somewhere completely new, which is exactly why divers who try night diving almost always come back wanting more. This one-day course teaches you to organise, promote and confidently deliver the Night Diver Specialty, covering torch discipline, low-visibility buoyancy and keeping a group oriented. It counts toward the five specialties required for Master Scuba Diver Trainer status.

About This Course

Night diving transforms a familiar site into somewhere completely new, and divers who try it are almost always eager to do it again, which makes the Night Diver Specialty Instructor course a genuinely rewarding one to add to your teaching repertoire. Over a single day, you will learn how to organise, promote, and confidently conduct the PADI Night Diver Specialty course, with an emphasis on why this kind of specialty training matters to the divers you certify.

The course works through the particular demands of teaching after dark, from briefing students on torch discipline and buoyancy in low visibility to managing group communication and orientation when the usual visual cues disappear. You will also cover how to frame the specialty so divers understand what they gain from it, since night diving often needs a little more encouragement to sign up for than daytime specialties.

Entry requires PADI Assistant Instructor, instructor-candidate, or Divemaster status, with some specialties carrying additional prerequisites of their own. Throughout the course you will pick up teaching tips and hands-on experience direct from your local PADI Course Director, grounded in real teaching scenarios rather than just theory.

Night Diver counts toward the five specialty instructor certifications required for Master Scuba Diver Trainer status, and it is one of the more popular specialties for instructors training with us in Reading to offer once qualified.

The process

How The Course Works

  1. Step 1

    Log the Dives First

Training to teach night diving means having a solid base of your own night dives already logged, since PADI expects real experience in the environment before you're trusted to supervise students in it. It's one of the few specialties where your logbook does some of the talking before training even starts.

PADI's Course Director route to this specialty instructor rating requires at least 10 logged night dives.

  2. Step 2

    Teaching Practicum After Dark

You'll practise briefing students on light communication, night navigation and the behavioural shift in marine life after sunset, then work on supervising a dive in the dark rather than just doing one yourself. It's consistently one of the specialties that turns curious divers into repeat customers.
