Course overview
What to expect
Night Diver
The underwater world transforms completely once the sun goes down, with nocturnal creatures emerging and colours glowing more vividly under torchlight than they ever do by day. This single, immersive day gets you genuinely comfortable diving after dark, learning to navigate with torchlight and compass when familiar landmarks vanish, and practising ascents and descents without your usual visual cues. It sets you up nicely for the Advanced Open Water Night Adventure Dive.
In detail
About This Course
The underwater world changes completely once the sun goes down. Fish that hide in the day come out to feed, nocturnal creatures emerge from crevices, and colours appear more vivid under torchlight than they ever do in daylight. The PADI Night Diver Specialty is a one day course built to get you comfortable, safe and genuinely enjoying diving after dark.
A big part of the course is learning to navigate at night, when familiar landmarks disappear and your world shrinks to the beam of your torch. You will practise techniques for staying oriented and keeping track of your buddy and dive site layout using light and a compass together.
Ascents and descents also get special attention, since judging depth and controlling buoyancy without the usual visual references takes practice. You will work through these in a controlled, supervised way until they feel natural rather than stressful.
Communication is another key skill, and you will learn simple, effective ways to talk to your buddy using nothing but a dive light. Once these fundamentals click, night diving quickly becomes a favourite among divers, offering a completely different perspective on sites you may already know well by day.
The process
How The Course Works

Step 1
Diving After Dark
With a dive light as your entire world, you learn to navigate, read your buddy's signals and control your buoyancy purely by feel rather than sight. A reef you think you already know reveals a completely different cast of nocturnal creatures, with colours glowing back at your torch beam in a way daylight never allows.
