What to expect

Fish Identification Instructor

Being able to name what's swimming past changes everything about a dive, and this course qualifies you to pass that skill on. In one day you'll learn to organise, promote and confidently run the Fish Identification Specialty at your own dive centre, building a structured approach to teaching species recognition and behaviour patterns. One of the most approachable, popular specialties to add to your teaching portfolio, and it counts toward Master Scuba Diver Trainer.

About This Course

Being able to name what you are looking at underwater changes the way you dive, turning a pleasant swim past the reef into a genuinely engaging encounter. This instructor course qualifies PADI professionals to teach that skill properly, training you to organise, promote and run the PADI Fish Identification Specialty Diver course at your own dive centre.

The training focuses on giving you a structured, confident approach to teaching fish identification, from helping students recognise families and behaviour patterns to building the observational habits that make every subsequent dive more rewarding. It emphasises just how much value this kind of specialty adds for everyday divers, many of whom are looking for exactly this sort of course to deepen their interest beyond basic certification.

You will need to hold Divemaster, Assistant Instructor or instructor-candidate status to enrol, and the course is taken as a Specialty Instructor programme. As with other specialties, there may be additional prerequisites or exit requirements attached, so check these before booking.

Along the way you will pick up teaching tips and hands-on experience you can put into practice immediately with your own students. Fish Identification is a popular, approachable specialty to add to your teaching portfolio, and also counts toward Master Scuba Diver Trainer status, which requires five or more Specialty Instructor certifications.

The process

How The Course Works

  1. Step 1

    Refresh the Material You'll Teach

Before you teach fish identification, you go back through the course content yourself - family and species characteristics, survey techniques, and the strategies students use to log what they see. It's less about learning new facts and more about learning how to make them stick for someone else.

  2. Step 2

Teaching Practicum With Your Course Director

You'll work through the course structure and practise presenting it underwater, building toward the logged diving experience PADI expects before signing off your rating. From there, you're qualified to turn any dive site into a fish ID lesson.

PADI's Course Director route to a standard specialty instructor rating requires at least 10 logged dives in that specialty area.
