About This Course

The PADI Equipment Specialist Specialty Instructor course prepares you to organise, promote and teach the Equipment Specialist Specialty Diver course, one of the most practically useful specialties for everyday diving. Over one day at Diving Academy, you will focus on how to pass on the knowledge divers need to select, maintain, adjust and troubleshoot their own scuba equipment, turning what can feel like a dry topic into a hands-on, confidence-building experience for your students.

The emphasis throughout is on teaching technique rather than simply revisiting equipment theory: how to structure sessions, demonstrate adjustments and fault-finding clearly, and get students genuinely comfortable handling and caring for their gear. You will come away with teaching tips and hands-on experience you can put into practice with your very next student, making this one of the more immediately applicable instructor specialties on offer.

Entry requires PADI Divemaster, Assistant Instructor or instructor-candidate status, and the course is taken as a Specialty Instructor course in its own right - worth noting that, as with several PADI specialties, additional prerequisites and exit requirements can apply depending on your existing certifications, so it is worth checking your eligibility with Diving Academy before booking.

Equipment Specialist Instructor also counts toward the Master Scuba Diver Trainer rating, which needs five or more specialty instructor certifications. For instructors who want to help divers get more confident and self-sufficient with their kit, this is a practical, well-rounded specialty to add to your teaching range.

The process

How The Course Works

  1. Step 1

    Two Routes In

Train with a Course Director and you skip the paperwork entirely - no need to prove 25 certifications issued or attendance at a manufacturer's repair clinic, requirements that only apply if you apply to PADI directly. It's why most instructors choose this route rather than going it alone.

PADI's direct application route for this specialty requires 25 certifications issued plus proof of attendance at a manufacturer's workshop; training with a Course Director waives both.

  2. Step 2

    Teaching Practicum

You'll turn your own troubleshooting know-how - o-rings, strap repairs, storage and care - into a structured lesson, then practise giving equipment configuration advice the way your future students will actually need it explained. It's a genuinely useful specialty to teach, because gear knowledge is something every diver eventually wants.
