About This Course

A dry suit opens up a huge amount of diving that would otherwise be off limits - cold water, longer seasons, and comfort on dives that would be a real endurance test in a wetsuit. The Dry Suit Diver Specialty Instructor course is where you learn to pass that comfort and confidence on to your own students, teaching them to manage buoyancy, trim and thermal protection properly in a dry suit rather than just muddling through.

Rather than simply covering the practical skills again, this course focuses on the instructional side: how to organise, promote and run the PADI Dry Suit Specialty Diver course effectively, and how to help divers genuinely understand why dry suit training is worth investing in, not just tick a box. You'll pick up teaching tips and hands-on experience you can put into practice with your very next student, straight from the course.

The course is taken as a Specialty Instructor programme, so you'll need to already hold PADI Divemaster, Assistant Instructor or instructor-candidate status to enrol - and as with several specialties, there can be some additional prerequisites or exit requirements depending on your existing experience, which we'll talk you through before you start.

Dry Suit is one of the most consistently useful specialties for instructors teaching in UK conditions, and it also counts toward Master Scuba Diver Trainer, which requires five or more PADI Specialty Instructor certifications - so it's a strong building block if MSDT is on your radar.

The process

How The Course Works

  1. Step 1

    Confined Water Coaching

You start in the pool, learning to coach the core skill of the whole specialty - adding and venting air from a dry suit to manage buoyancy independently of the BCD - until it's automatic enough to teach clearly under pressure.

PADI states: Dry Suit Diver can be completed in 1-3 days, starting with pool practice adding, venting and controlling air in the suit.

  2. Step 2

    Open Water Dives & Sign-Off

Once a student has the pool skills down, you take them through two open water dives to confirm everything holds up in real conditions - the same two dives every Dry Suit Diver candidate needs before certification.

PADI states: Dry Suit Diver includes two open water dives with an instructor.
