What to expect

Dry Suit Diver

Cold water should never mean the end of your diving season, and this specialty is what turns UK diving into a genuine year-round pursuit. In a single day you'll get to grips with suit types and undergarments, then move into the skill that really matters: managing the air inside your suit alongside your BCD so buoyancy stays controlled. You'll also pick up maintenance knowledge, checking seals and valves and carrying out basic repairs.

About This Course

Cold water should never mean the end of the diving season, and the PADI Dry Suit Diver specialty is what makes comfortable, confident diving possible all year round in UK waters. Run over a single day at Diving Academy, it takes the mystery out of diving dry for anyone used to a wetsuit.

The course covers the different types of dry suits available, from neoprene to trilaminate, and helps divers understand which style and undergarment combination suits their diving best. Most of the focus, though, is on the skill that makes or breaks a dry suit dive: managing the air inside the suit alongside a BCD to control buoyancy smoothly and avoid uncontrolled ascents.

Divers also pick up practical maintenance knowledge, including how to check seals and valves, spot early signs of wear, and carry out basic repairs to keep a dry suit in good working order between dives.

Open to certified PADI Open Water Divers, Dry Suit Diver is an essential specialty for UK diving and pairs naturally with the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course, extending the diving season and opening up local wrecks and sites that are best explored dry.

The process

How The Course Works

  1. Step 1

Suit Fitting & Confined Water Dive

You'll start by working out which suit type and undergarments suit the diving you plan to do, then get into a confined water dive to practise the basics - putting the suit on and off with minimal fuss and getting a feel for the extra air space you're now managing.

  2. Step 2

    Open Water Dives

With the fundamentals sorted, you take it into open water. Your instructor helps you dial in buoyancy control using your suit's air, run through cold-water safety procedures and cover basic repairs and maintenance - all packed into a single day so you can dive comfortably whatever the temperature.

PADI states: a confined water dive plus open water dives, completed in as little as one day
