About This Course

Drift diving is one of the most exhilarating ways to explore a reef or channel, letting a diver cover ground effortlessly while the current does the work. The PADI Drift Diver Specialty Instructor course, run over one day at Diving Academy, trains you to organise, promote and confidently deliver this popular specialty to your own students.

You will cover how to plan and brief drift dives safely, how to manage entry and exit logistics with boats or shore support, and how to teach students to read current, use surface marker buoys correctly and stay together as a group when visibility or conditions change quickly. Just as importantly, the course looks at how to present the value of specialty training so that your students see drift diving not as a one-off experience but as a genuine skill worth developing.

To take part you need PADI Divemaster, Assistant Instructor or instructor-candidate status, since this is taken as a Specialty Instructor course, and you should be aware that some specialties carry additional prerequisites and exit requirements. Throughout the day you will pick up teaching tips and hands-on experience you can put to use with your very next class.

Certifying as a Drift Diver Specialty Instructor adds a genuinely popular course to your teaching lineup and counts toward the five specialties required for Master Scuba Diver Trainer, a natural next step for instructors at Diving Academy looking to broaden their qualifications.

The process

How The Course Works

  1. Step 1

Reading Currents & Planning the Drift

You work through how to brief a drift dive properly - reading currents and tides, choosing entry and exit points, and setting up signalling floats - so your students go in with a plan rather than just going with the flow blindly.

  2. Step 2

    Coaching Control in Moving Water

In the water, you practise coaching the skills that matter when a current is doing the work for you - buoyancy control, natural navigation and constant buddy contact - so students stay relaxed instead of fighting the dive.
