Course overview
What to expect
Diver Propulsion Vehicle Instructor
Give your students the closest thing diving has to flying. This course prepares you to organise, promote and teach the PADI DPV Specialty, one of the most exhilarating add-ons a diver can experience. In one hands-on training day, you'll learn to brief and supervise divers safely on propulsion vehicles and present the specialty so students understand its appeal, moving you a step closer to Master Scuba Diver Trainer status.
In detail
About This Course
Scootering through the water on a DPV is one of the most exhilarating ways to extend a dive, covering more ground, conserving air and opening up sites that would otherwise be out of reach. This instructor course prepares PADI professionals to pass that experience on properly, teaching you how to organise, promote and run the PADI DPV Specialty Diver course at your own centre.
Rather than simply handing you a manual, the course is built around practical, hands-on training and teaching tips you can put to use with your very first group of DPV students. You will cover how to brief and supervise divers using propulsion vehicles safely, how to plan dives that make the most of the extra range a DPV offers, and how to present the specialty so divers understand its real value.
To take this course you need to already hold Divemaster, Assistant Instructor or instructor-candidate status, and it is completed as a Specialty Instructor course. Some specialties carry their own additional prerequisites and exit requirements, so it is worth checking these apply to your situation before booking.
Once qualified, you can offer DPV training as a genuine point of difference for your centre. It also counts toward Master Scuba Diver Trainer status, which requires five or more PADI Specialty Instructor certifications, making this a strong building block for instructors looking to progress their career.
The process
How The Course Works

Step 1
Scooter Selection & Dive Planning
You get into the detail your students won't see on the surface - choosing and maintaining a DPV, planning routes and range, and keeping buddy procedures workable when everyone's moving three times their normal pace.

Step 2
Coaching the Handling Dives
The diver course you'll be teaching is built around two dives focused on DPV handling, so you practise coaching proper descents, ascents and control until steering a scooter feels as natural as finning.
PADI states: Diver Propulsion Vehicle Diver requires a PADI (Junior) Open Water Diver certification, a minimum age of 12, and includes two dives.
