About This Course

The PADI Dive Against Debris Specialty Instructor course trains PADI professionals to organise, promote and run the Dive Against Debris Specialty Diver course - one of the most conservation-focused specialties in the PADI catalogue. Delivered in a single day at Diving Academy, the course walks you through the survey methodology divers use to identify, remove and report underwater debris, and, more importantly, how to teach it so your own students understand the real environmental value of the work they are doing.

Because Dive Against Debris sits at the intersection of diver training and marine conservation, this instructor course also covers how to communicate that purpose convincingly to prospective students, helping you build a specialty programme that genuinely engages your local diving community rather than feeling like a box-ticking exercise. All teaching materials are available free to download, and PADI donates the course application fee to Project AWARE, so running this specialty supports ocean conservation directly.

To take the course you will need renewed PADI Instructor status, along with either a Dive Against Debris Distinctive Specialty Instructor course completed with a Course Director, or a direct application route. Diving Academy can guide you through whichever path suits your existing qualifications.

Like other PADI specialty instructor ratings, Dive Against Debris counts toward the Master Scuba Diver Trainer rating. For instructors who care about marine conservation and want a specialty that gives back beyond the classroom, this is a natural and rewarding addition to your teaching portfolio.

The process

How The Course Works

  1. Step 1

    Eligibility & Instructor Toolkit

As a PADI Professional at Assistant Instructor level or above, you're already eligible to teach this AWARE specialty by direct application, and you'll work from the dedicated Dive Against Debris Instructor Guide and course toolkit rather than starting from scratch.

PADI states: Assistant Instructors and above are automatically eligible to teach Dive Against Debris, using the Dive Against Debris Instructor Guide and course toolkit.

  2. Step 2

    Briefing the Survey Method

You learn to walk students through the full survey cycle - planning the dive, identifying and safely removing debris, then logging what's found - so every dive against debris your students run also feeds real conservation data.
