Course overview
What to expect
Altitude Diver
Some of the best diving you'll ever do is nowhere near the sea, and this specialty is what lets you do it safely. In a single day you'll learn how thinner air at elevation changes nitrogen in your body, and how to adjust your dive computer or work the tables by hand above 300 metres, plus the real hazards of mountain lakes and high quarries. It pairs perfectly with Dry Suit training for divers chasing cold, high water.
In detail
About This Course
Diving in a mountain lake or high-altitude quarry is not the same as diving at sea level, and the PADI Altitude Diver specialty teaches you exactly why. Reduced atmospheric pressure at elevation changes how nitrogen behaves in your body, which means standard dive tables and some computer settings need adjusting before you get in the water.
Over the course you will learn how to plan, organize and execute altitude dives properly, including how to recognise the specific hazards these environments bring, from colder water and lower visibility to the physiological effects of reduced pressure. You will also cover how to avoid and respond to emergencies that are more likely to arise in an altitude setting.
Practical skills form the core of the course: adjusting a dive computer for altitude use, or working through altitude dive profiles by hand using the RDP Table or eRDPML. These are skills you will actually use every time you dive somewhere above 300 metres elevation.
Completed in a single day, the Altitude Diver specialty is a genuinely useful qualification for divers who explore inland sites, and it pairs naturally with Dry Suit training for those tackling cold, high-altitude water.
The process
How The Course Works

Step 1
Altitude Theory & Planning
You start by learning how thinner air at elevation changes the way nitrogen behaves in your body, and how to adjust your dive computer or work out profiles using the RDP Table or eRDPML instead of the standard sea-level tables. You'll also cover the physiological risks specific to altitude and how to plan around them before you ever get in the water.

Step 2
Two Dives at Elevation
With your instructor, you put the theory to work on two dives above 300 metres, adjusting your buoyancy and gear for the thinner air and cooler mountain-lake conditions. It's a genuinely different kind of diving, and one of the few specialties that takes you higher rather than deeper.
