Half Term in Reading: Family Scuba and Mermaid Tasters
What half-term scuba and Mermaid taster sessions in Reading actually involve, why families keep coming back, and how to book before it fills up.

February half term has a habit of arriving faster than anyone plans for, and by the second wet, grey day of the school holiday, most Reading parents are actively hunting for something that is not a screen, a soft play centre, or another trip to the same three places. If you have never considered a swimming pool as the answer, this is your nudge. Between our scuba tasters and our increasingly popular Mermaid sessions, half term at Diving Academy has become one of the busiest, and most requested, weeks of our calendar, and it is worth understanding exactly what is on offer before the week books out.
Why Half Term Is Genuinely Our Busiest Family Week
There is a simple reason half term works so well for trying something like this for the first time. School-term evenings are already packed with homework, clubs, and early bedtimes, leaving little room to try something entirely new without disrupting a routine that is working. Half term removes that friction. A two-hour taster session slots easily into a week without the usual pressure, and children arrive without the tiredness that builds up during a normal school week, which genuinely affects how quickly they pick up new skills in water.
We also see a lot of repeat families during half term specifically, households who tried a taster in a previous holiday and are back to continue, or to bring a sibling who was too young the first time round. It has become something of a tradition for a number of local families, in the same way other households might have a standing half-term trip to the same beach or the same relatives.
The Mermaid Appeal: What's Actually Behind It
Mermaiding has grown enormously in popularity over the past few years, and half term is when we see that interest peak. Part of the appeal is obvious. Swimming with a monofin genuinely feels different to normal swimming, more fluid, more powerful, closer to how it looks in the videos that get children asking about it in the first place. But the appeal runs deeper than novelty. Mermaiding builds real core strength, breath control, and water confidence, all under proper safety supervision, and it does so while feeling like play rather than a structured lesson, which matters enormously for children who have found traditional swimming lessons dull or intimidating.
Our Mermaid programme is structured in proper progressive levels, much like our scuba pathways, so what looks like a fun half-term activity is actually building genuine, transferable skill over time for children who want to keep coming back.
What a Half-Term Taster Session Actually Involves
For scuba tasters, sessions begin with a straightforward safety briefing and equipment introduction in the shallow end, well before anyone attempts to breathe underwater for the first time. Instructors work in small groups, moving at the pace of the least confident person in the pool rather than rushing anyone. Most first-timers, both children and adults, are comfortably breathing underwater and moving around the pool independently within the first half hour, and the rest of the session usually gets spent building on that initial confidence with simple skills and, often, just enjoying being underwater.
Mermaid tasters follow a similar shape, starting with proper monofin fitting and basic technique on the pool edge before moving into the water for guided practice. Both activities are run by qualified instructors with a strong safety-first structure, whatever the session might look like from the viewing gallery.
Weather, Warmth, and Why Indoors Wins in February
February in Reading is rarely inviting for outdoor activity, and that is precisely part of the appeal here. Our sessions run in a heated indoor pool, so the weather outside makes no difference whatsoever to whether the week's plans survive. Parents juggling half term around work commitments particularly value that reliability, since an outdoor activity booked weeks in advance can be ruined by a single rainy forecast, while an indoor pool session simply is not affected either way.
Wetsuits are provided for scuba tasters and keep participants comfortably warm throughout, so there is no need to worry about children getting cold during a session, a common early concern for parents who have not tried indoor diving before. Mermaid sessions similarly run in warm, controlled pool conditions, with monofins and any other kit properly fitted before anyone gets in the water.
A Good Fit for Different Kinds of Families
Not every family looks the same, and half-term bookings reflect that. We regularly see single parents bringing one or two children for a shared activity that does not require juggling multiple drop-offs, grandparents treating grandchildren to something memorable during a visit, and blended families using a taster session as a genuinely neutral, fun activity that everyone can enjoy together regardless of age gaps between siblings or step-siblings. The structure of small groups and individual pacing means these different family shapes are accommodated naturally rather than needing special arrangements.
Practical Details Parents Usually Ask About
Do children need to be strong swimmers already? For Mermaid sessions particularly, a reasonable comfort level in water helps, though instructors adapt sessions for a wide range of starting abilities. For scuba tasters, confidence in water matters more than swimming speed or technique, since the equipment itself does a lot of the work.
What should families bring? Just swimwear, a towel, and enthusiasm. All specialist equipment, including wetsuits where relevant, is provided and properly fitted on arrival.
Can parents watch? Yes, and many do. Half term sessions often turn into something of a family outing even for the adults not getting in the water themselves that day.
Is it too late to book if half term has already started? Availability moves quickly during the holiday, but it is always worth calling, since sessions occasionally have late openings from cancellations.
Beyond the Taster: What Comes Next
A half-term taster is designed to be a genuinely low-pressure first step, not a sales pitch dressed up as a fun activity, but plenty of families do want to know what happens if their child, or they, want to continue. Scuba tasters lead naturally into full Open Water certification through our Scuba Academy for those old enough, while younger children often continue building water confidence through Mermaid levels until they reach an age where scuba training becomes an option too. Our full course listing lays out the various pathways available for different ages and interests, and our team is always glad to talk through what makes sense for a specific child or family rather than pushing a one-size-fits-all next step.
Making the Most of the Week
If half term is looming and you still have a gap in the schedule, our advice is simple: book early, be honest with instructors about any nerves or previous water experiences so sessions can be tailored properly, and treat the first session as a taster in the truest sense, an experiment rather than a commitment. Whether it turns into a one-off half-term memory or the start of years of family diving and mermaiding, either outcome counts as a genuinely well-spent school holiday, and it beats another day of screens hands down.
