Mermaiding has gone from internet novelty to a genuinely popular branch of aquatic sport over the last several years, and our Discover Mermaid course is where most people take their first proper look at it. It sits inside our wider Mermaid Academy, and it is designed specifically as a taster, low-commitment and genuinely fun, built to work whether you are a confident swimmer curious about monofins or a total beginner who simply likes the idea of swimming like a mermaid for an afternoon.
What Is Discover Mermaid?
Discover Mermaid is an introductory session that teaches the fundamentals of monofin swimming, body undulation, breath control and basic underwater posing, all in a supervised pool environment. It is not a certification course in the traditional PADI sense, it is closer to a structured, expertly supervised taster designed to give you a real feel for the discipline before deciding whether to commit to further training.
Unlike scuba diving, mermaiding is entirely breath-hold based, using a single fin, the monofin, that binds both feet together, requiring a genuinely different swimming technique built around a dolphin-style kick from the hips rather than a flutter kick from the knees.
Who Discover Mermaid Is For
The course attracts a genuinely broad range of people. Confident swimmers looking for a new challenge make up a good chunk of our bookings, as do parents bringing children for a memorable birthday activity, and increasingly, freedivers and swimmers curious about monofin technique for its own athletic value. We regularly run sessions for hen parties, team days out and simple one-off treat bookings, since it photographs beautifully and genuinely surprises people with how physical it turns out to be.
It suits confident swimmers best, since you will spend meaningful time with your face in the water and need to be comfortable without constant standing breaks. That said, our instructors adjust pacing constantly through the session, and nervous swimmers are absolutely welcome, they simply progress at a gentler rate throughout.
Prerequisites and What to Bring
There is no prior certification required for Discover Mermaid, which is part of what makes it such an accessible entry point. You do need to be a reasonably confident swimmer, comfortable putting your face in water and swimming a short distance unaided. A minimum age applies, and our team can confirm current age and swimming ability requirements when you book your session.
Bring a swimming costume and a towel, and if you own one, your own mermaid tail or monofin, though we provide monofins and can advise on tail options for anyone wanting to explore the sport further. Goggles or a mask are recommended, and long hair is best tied back securely before you start.
What a Typical Discover Mermaid Session Looks Like
Sessions start on land, with a briefing covering monofin safety, the specific breath-hold rules we follow, and basic body positioning. From there, it moves into the shallow end for fin-fitting and initial kick practice, focusing on generating movement from the hips and core rather than the legs alone, which feels counterintuitive at first for almost everyone who tries it.
As confidence builds, the session progresses to short breath-hold sequences, gentle underwater sequences and photogenic poses, always under close instructor supervision with a clear one-up, one-down safety approach at all times. Sessions typically run for around an hour to ninety minutes, and most people are surprised by just how much of a workout it turns out to be, monofin swimming uses core muscles that regular swimming rarely touches at all.
What You Actually Learn
By the end of Discover Mermaid, most participants can perform a controlled dolphin kick using the monofin, hold a comfortable breath-hold sequence within safe limits, and manage basic buoyancy and body positioning underwater. Just as importantly, you leave with an honest sense of whether mermaiding is something you want to pursue further, since it genuinely is not for everyone, and that clarity is valuable in its own right.
Instructors also introduce basic safety principles around breath-hold activity, including never practising monofin swimming alone and understanding the physical limits of breath-holding, principles that carry over usefully even if you never take mermaiding any further than this one session.
Most participants also come away with a surprisingly sharper sense of body awareness underwater generally. The core-driven kick technique used in monofin swimming has a lot in common with the trim and body positioning instructors look for in good scuba divers, and several of our scuba students who have also tried Discover Mermaid report that it noticeably improved their in-water posture and control on subsequent open water dives.
Common Questions Before Booking
Do I need to be a strong swimmer? Reasonably confident, yes, but you do not need to be an athlete or a former competitive swimmer to enjoy the session.
Is it safe? Yes, sessions are closely supervised, breath-hold limits are conservative, and instructors are trained specifically in breath-hold safety protocols, not just general pool supervision.
Can I bring my own tail? Absolutely, and we are happy to advise beforehand on what works well for a first session versus what to consider once you are progressing further.
Is this connected to freediving? There is real overlap in breath-hold technique, and some participants go on to explore our Freediving Academy once they discover how much they enjoy breath-hold discipline generally.
How far in advance should I book? Sessions are popular, especially around weekends and school holidays, so booking a couple of weeks ahead is sensible if you have a specific date in mind for a birthday or group outing.
Discover Mermaid as a Gift or Group Booking
Because it needs no prior experience and no equipment of your own, Discover Mermaid works especially well as a gift experience or a group booking. We regularly host it for milestone birthdays, hen parties and school holiday activities, and the format scales comfortably from a single participant to a small group booked in together, with instructors adjusting the session to suit whoever is in the water that day.
If you are booking for a child, a parent, or a friend who has mentioned mermaiding in passing, it tends to land as a genuinely memorable present rather than a generic voucher, precisely because so few people ever actually try it despite having seen it online.
Why It's Worth Doing, and Where It Leads
Discover Mermaid works precisely because it lowers the barrier to something that looks intimidating from the outside. There is no certification card at stake, no exam pressure, just a genuinely well-taught introduction to a discipline that combines fitness, technique and a fair bit of pure fun. For many people it stays exactly that, a brilliant one-off experience worth repeating occasionally with friends or family.
For others, it becomes a genuine gateway, either deeper into further mermaid training within the Mermaid Academy pathway, or sideways into freediving, where the same breath-hold discipline and body awareness translate directly. Either way, it is a low-risk, high-reward way to try something most people never get the chance to.
