Advanced Mermaid: Fin Technique for Serious Swimmers

Ready to move past your first mermaid session? Here's what the Advanced Mermaid course covers, who it suits, and how to book at our Reading academy.

There's a moment in every mermaid diver's training when swimming with a single fin stops feeling like a novelty and starts feeling like a skill worth mastering properly. That's exactly where the Advanced Mermaid course comes in. As the UK's spring diving season gets underway and divers across our Reading academy start pulling wetsuits out of storage and checking cylinder dates, it's also the perfect time to think about adding a genuinely different string to your underwater bow. Advanced Mermaid takes the fundamentals you picked up in your entry-level mermaid course and pushes them into the realm of real technique, real endurance, and real underwater performance.

What Is the Advanced Mermaid Course?

Advanced Mermaid is the next formal step within our Mermaid Academy, sitting above the introductory mermaid experience and building toward more specialised routines, longer breath-holds, and safer, more controlled monofin technique. Where a first mermaid course is about getting comfortable in a monofin and enjoying the sensation of swimming like a mermaid or merman, Advanced Mermaid is about doing it with purpose, precision, and proper safety awareness. You'll work on sustained undulation, streamlined body positioning, controlled surfacing, and the kind of underwater grace that looks effortless because the fundamentals have been drilled properly.

You can see the full course listing and dates over on the Advanced Mermaid course page, where our instructors keep the calendar updated as spring and summer sessions fill up.

Who Is Advanced Mermaid For?

This course suits confident swimmers who have already completed an introductory mermaid programme and want to go further. You don't need any scuba diving background at all, since this is a freediving-adjacent, monofin-based skill set that stands entirely on its own. What you do need is comfort in open water, a reasonable level of swimming fitness, and the entry-level mermaid qualification, or equivalent prior experience, which our instructors are happy to assess before you book.

We see a real mix of people on this course. Some are strong swimmers looking for a new physical challenge. Some are performers or hobbyists who want to look genuinely polished in a monofin for photography or events. Others are simply divers and swimmers who fell in love with the sensation of that first mermaid session and want to build proper technique rather than just splashing about. Whatever your starting point, the course is built to meet you there and move you forward.

What a Typical Session Looks Like

Sessions run in the pool environment first, where your instructor can watch your undulation technique closely and correct small inefficiencies before they become habits. Expect a warm-up in the monofin, a technique review of what you learned previously, and then progressively longer and more controlled swims focusing on hip-driven movement rather than kicking from the knee, which is one of the most common habits we correct early on.

From there, sessions build toward combining movement with breath control, working on relaxed, efficient breath-holds rather than anything that pushes you toward discomfort. Safety is built into every stage: your instructor is watching constantly, session pacing is conservative, and nobody is ever encouraged to push past what feels comfortable. As you progress, you'll start working on directional changes, depth changes within the pool's limits, and smoother, more controlled surfacing technique.

Monofin Technique

A huge part of Advanced Mermaid is refining monofin technique itself. Small adjustments to ankle flexibility, hip drive, and core engagement make an enormous difference to how far and how efficiently you travel per undulation. Instructors spend real time on this because it's the difference between swimming that feels tiring and swimming that feels like flying.

Underwater Sequences and Poise

For those interested in the more performance-orientated side of mermaiding, the course introduces simple underwater sequences, controlled spins, and poised positioning that translate well to photography or simply looking and feeling more confident underwater.

Safety and Breath Awareness

Every stage of Advanced Mermaid reinforces safe breath-hold practice, buddy awareness, and recognising your own limits. This isn't freediving in the competitive sense, but the same respect for physiology and safety underpins everything we teach.

How Advanced Mermaid Fits the Bigger Pathway

Within the Mermaid Academy, Advanced Mermaid sits between the introductory course and more specialised performance or instructor-level training further down the line. Completing it properly sets you up well if you want to continue toward more advanced sequence work, longer-duration swims, or even helping teach newer students once you've built enough experience. It's also entirely compatible with continuing in other academies at the same time. Plenty of our mermaid students are also working through Scuba or Freediving courses, and the crossover in breath control and body awareness between disciplines is genuinely useful rather than a coincidence.

Gear and Preparation for Spring

Because Advanced Mermaid sessions typically run through spring as the wider diving season ramps up, it's a good moment to think about your equipment as a whole. A well-fitted monofin makes an enormous difference to technique, and an ill-fitting one can mask genuine progress by making every undulation harder than it needs to be. If you're using your own fin rather than hired kit, it's worth having it checked before your first session of the year, along with any fabric tail or costume you plan to train in, since these can degrade over a winter in storage. Our instructors are always happy to advise on fit and condition as part of your booking.

Common Questions Before You Book

Do I need to be an amazing swimmer already? No, but you should be comfortable and relaxed in water over your head, ideally already holding the entry-level mermaid qualification.

Will it help with scuba diving too? Many students find the improved finning technique, breath control, and body awareness genuinely improve their trim and air consumption if they go on to scuba dive as well, even though the two disciplines are distinct.

Is it physically demanding? It's more demanding than a first mermaid session, but sessions are paced by your instructor around your fitness and comfort, not a fixed script.

Can adults do this course, or is it only for children? Adults make up a large proportion of our mermaid students. It's a genuinely popular adult hobby, not just a children's activity.

How long does the course take to complete? Most students complete Advanced Mermaid across several structured sessions rather than a single day, allowing technique to bed in properly between visits.

What if I've had a long break from mermaid swimming? That's genuinely common, and instructors will happily assess your current level and adjust the pace of early sessions accordingly rather than assuming a fixed starting point.

Why It's Worth Doing

Beyond the obvious fun factor, Advanced Mermaid builds real physical competence: better breath control, better core strength, better in-water confidence, and a skill that very few people can say they've properly learned. It's also a natural stepping stone if you want to continue further within the Mermaid Academy toward more specialised or performance-level training down the line.

As part of a spring gear check, it's also worth having your monofin and equipment properly assessed before the season gets going. Our team at the Reading academy can advise on fit and condition alongside your course booking, so everything is ready when your first session starts.
